Hideo Kojima Altered Death Stranding 2: On the Beach Mid-Development Because It Was Too Well-Received

In a revelation that highlights Hideo Kojima's unconventional creative philosophy, it has been confirmed that the visionary developer made script and gameplay changes to Death Stranding 2: On the Beach during development—not due to flaws or poor feedback, but because early playtests were too positive.

The insight comes from French composer and filmmaker Yoann Lemoine, better known as Woodkid, in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, where he spoke about the immense creative and technical challenges involved in composing the soundtrack for Kojima Productions' latest title. As one of the co-composers on the project, Woodkid noted the complexity of writing real-time reactive music that adapts to the player’s actions—an approach in line with Kojima’s signature emphasis on immersion and unpredictability.

Toward the end of the interview, however, Woodkid shared a particularly striking anecdote. During one of their meetings, **Kojima reportedly revealed he had decided to revise major sections of the game—**including story scripts and the presentation of pivotal events—because the game was being received too positively by test audiences.

According to Kojima, his goal was never to create a universally liked title, but rather one that invokes strong emotions—even negative ones at first—so players would form deeper, more enduring relationships with the experience over time. "People come to love what they initially resist," Kojima is said to have remarked.

This aligns with comments Kojima made earlier in Edge Magazine, where he shared dissatisfaction with the sequel’s reception in early previews and lamented the idea of making games that appeal too widely. He emphasized that his creative vision favors polarizing content, and he would rather Death Stranding 2 be controversial than comfortably mainstream.
