Hideki Kamiya Once Again Declares His Passion for a Devil May Cry Remake

Legendary game designer Hideki Kamiya, co-creator of Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and Viewtiful Joe, continues to make his intentions clear to the industry—and particularly Capcom: he wants to remake the original Devil May Cry.

In a recent video on his official YouTube channel, Kamiya once again responded to the frequently-asked question about revisiting the iconic 2001 title. And just like in February, when he first addressed the topic in the same setting, his enthusiasm hasn't wavered.

“As for a Devil May Cry remake, of course I’d love to do that,” said Kamiya. “I usually don’t replay my own games after release, and Devil May Cry is no exception. But once in a while, I catch gameplay clips and think, ‘Yeah, this really does feel like a 24-year-old game design.’ With today’s technology and game design approach, of course, I’d want to remake it from the ground up.”

Kamiya made it clear that while he’s not currently in discussions with Capcom about a DMC remake, he’s more than ready if the opportunity arises:

“If that ever happens… well, I don’t think seriously unless it’s really happening. But if the time comes, I’ll come up with something. That’s what I do! So Capcom, leave it to me! Also, let me handle Viewtiful Joe too!”

These comments echo his earlier sentiments from February, where he also voiced a desire to revisit Scalebound, the ambitious yet cancelled Xbox-exclusive RPG. Kamiya has never hidden his affection for the titles he helped create, but his consistent public reminders seem to be part of a deliberate strategy to drum up fan support and push the conversation forward within Capcom and the broader industry.

Given that Capcom has been revisiting its classics with remakes like Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4, the idea of a Devil May Cry remake helmed by Kamiya himself is not far-fetched. In fact, with Devil May Cry 5 receiving widespread critical and commercial acclaim, a modern reimagining of the original game might be exactly what long-time fans and new players would welcome.

And as for Viewtiful Joe—another beloved IP languishing in dormancy—Kamiya’s eager pitch is a reminder that the creative force behind it hasn’t moved on, even if the industry momentarily has.

Kamiya's legacy as one of Japan’s most revered game creators makes his consistent appeals even more notable. Whether Capcom chooses to listen remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Kamiya is ready.
