DOOM: The Dark Ages PS5 Physical Edition Requires Full Game Download, Disc Only Includes 400MB
Bethesda’s upcoming DOOM: The Dark Ages may be arriving on PlayStation 5 next week, but early buyers of the physical edition are in for a surprising and disappointing technical requirement: the disc contains just 400MB of data and requires a full digital download of the game to function.
According to a report from Polish gaming outlet PPE, users who managed to obtain early retail copies of the PS5 version discovered that the game will not run directly off the disc. Instead, an internet connection is mandatory to initiate the download, essentially making the disc a license key with minimal data, rather than a proper physical medium.
This design choice has drawn criticism from players and preservation advocates alike, particularly as Bethesda has yet to publicly comment on the issue just days before release. With physical editions often purchased by collectors and fans looking to avoid massive downloads or preserve ownership long-term, this development has cast a shadow over the game’s retail strategy.
This isn't the first time a major release has launched with minimal disc data, but it does stand out given DOOM’s legacy and fan expectations. The 400MB of data reportedly on the disc is insufficient for gameplay and likely serves only to authenticate ownership before initiating a full online download.
What This Means for Buyers
Offline Play Not Possible from Disc: You cannot install or play the game without an internet connection.
No True Physical Ownership: The disc does not contain the full game, undermining the value of physical preservation.
No Publisher Transparency: Bethesda has not officially stated this requirement ahead of release, risking consumer backlash.
