Helldivers 2 Finally Adds NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR 4.0.3, XeSS 3.0, And Console Upscaling On May 27
Arrowhead Game Studios is finally bringing major upscaling support to Helldivers 2, with a new technical update scheduled for May 27 across PC and console platforms. The update, developed in collaboration with Nixxes, will introduce long requested image reconstruction technologies, latency improvements, stability enhancements, and several visual optimization features designed to keep performance more consistent during the game’s most chaotic battles.
The announcement was shared through the official Helldivers 2 Steam update, where Arrowhead confirmed that the update is built around 3 main technical goals: stability, reduced latency, and advanced upscaling. For a game as intense as Helldivers 2, where heavy combat, explosions, enemy swarms, and large scale cooperative action can push hardware hard, these changes could have a meaningful impact on both image quality and moment to moment responsiveness.
“We’re excited to announce a new set of technical improvements, deploying May 27th. In collaboration with our partners at Nixxes, this release brings a range of long awaited updates across all platforms. Every frame counts when the pressure is on. This update focuses on three primary pillars: stability, latency reduction, and advanced upscaling technologies, helping ensure performance stays consistent, even in the most demanding moments.”

The biggest addition is upscaling support, something the Helldivers 2 community has requested for a long time. Unlike many modern PC releases, Helldivers 2 launched without support for major upscaling technologies such as NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR, or Intel XeSS. That will finally change next week, with PC players receiving support for AMD FSR 4.0.3 on supported high end GPUs, AMD FSR 3.1.5, NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, and Intel XeSS 3.0.
Console users will also receive upscaling support, although the rollout is not equal across all platforms. The standard PlayStation 5 version will use FSR 3.1, and Xbox Series X and S will also use FSR 3.1. PlayStation 5 Pro, however, will only receive PSSR 1.0, which may disappoint owners of Sony’s upgraded console. The newer PSSR implementation launched earlier this year has already shown stronger image quality in other titles, making the decision to use the first version of PSSR feel like a missed opportunity for now.
That said, the addition of any native upscaling support is still a major step forward for Helldivers 2. The game’s large battlefield effects, heavy particle activity, and fast combat scenarios can make stable performance difficult, especially on hardware targeting higher resolutions. With DLSS, FSR, XeSS, and PSSR now entering the pipeline, more players should have better flexibility between image quality and frame rate.
Beyond upscaling, Arrowhead is also adding several advanced visual optimization features. Variable Refresh Rate support is coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro, helping reduce potential stuttering caused by V Sync while avoiding screen tearing on supported displays. This should be especially helpful in high pressure combat moments where frame pacing can affect both responsiveness and visual comfort.
Variable Rate Shading is also being added, allowing the game to reduce shading rates in selected parts of the image to lower GPU load while keeping visual quality focused where it matters most. Dynamic Resolution Scaling will also be integrated for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC, helping maintain more stable frame rates when the game becomes more graphically demanding.
Resolution improvements are also part of the update. Arrowhead confirmed that the Performance preset on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will increase to 1440p, while the Quality preset on PlayStation 5 Power Saving Mode will also receive a resolution boost. These adjustments should give console players a cleaner image while still targeting smoother performance.
For PC players, the addition of DLSS 4.5, FSR 4.0.3, FSR 3.1.5, and XeSS 3.0 makes Helldivers 2 much more aligned with current PC gaming expectations. Upscaling has become a standard feature in modern performance tuning, especially as players target higher resolutions, ultrawide displays, and demanding visual settings. The update should also give players with different GPU brands more options instead of limiting improvements to a single vendor.
Still, the PlayStation 5 Pro situation will likely become a point of discussion. Sony’s upgraded console is meant to benefit from PSSR, and with newer versions already delivering better results elsewhere, receiving only PSSR 1.0 could feel underwhelming. Hopefully, Arrowhead and Nixxes will revisit this in a future update and bring support for the upgraded PSSR version later.
The May 27 update is only the beginning of Arrowhead’s broader technical improvement plan. The studio says it will monitor all hardware configurations and gaming hardware after the update goes live, then follow up with another dedicated tech focused update planned for this summer. That means Helldivers 2 players could see additional improvements after the first wave of upscaling and optimization features arrives.
For now, this is one of the most important technical updates Helldivers 2 has received since launch. The game is finally catching up with modern upscaling standards, giving PC and console players more tools to balance image quality, performance, and stability in one of the most demanding cooperative shooters currently available.
Are you more excited to try Helldivers 2 with DLSS 4.5, FSR 4.0.3, XeSS 3.0, or are you waiting to see if PlayStation 5 Pro gets upgraded PSSR support later?
