GTA VI Reportedly Targets 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X
Grand Theft Auto VI may offer both 30 FPS and 60 FPS graphics modes on the standard PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, according to a new report from Polish journalist Borys Nieśpielak. The performance option is reportedly under active development at Rockstar Games, although the studio may not be able to complete it before the game launches on November 19, 2026.
Nieśpielak shared the information during a new episode of the Rock and Borys podcast, stating that it came from a single source he considers credible and close to Rockstar. According to the report, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions are intended to offer a quality mode targeting 30 FPS and a performance mode targeting 60 FPS. The Xbox Series S version is currently said to target 30 FPS, although Rockstar may be receiving additional support from Microsoft while exploring whether more options are technically possible.
"It is a single source, though a very credible one."

The largest uncertainty concerns timing. Nieśpielak says Rockstar is working toward having the 60 FPS mode available at launch, but the studio has not reached complete confidence that it can achieve that target. If development and optimization cannot be completed before November, the performance option could reportedly arrive through a later update. Rockstar has not confirmed any part of the report, and the company has not publicly discussed graphics modes for any supported console.
Nieśpielak previously reported that Fool’s Theory was developing new content for The Witcher 3 before the project was officially revealed, giving his latest comments more credibility than an anonymous social media rumor. However, previous accuracy does not guarantee that every technical target will survive development, particularly when the information comes from only 1 source and concerns work that is still underway.
Reaching 60 FPS on the standard consoles would be an impressive technical accomplishment. GTA VI is expected to feature a large open world with dense traffic, crowds, physics, artificial intelligence, dynamic weather, and detailed interiors. Maintaining twice the frame rate of a 30 FPS quality mode would likely require reductions to internal resolution, image quality, crowd density, environmental detail, reflections, shadows, or other effects. The final compromise will depend on whether the game is primarily limited by graphics processing or by the consoles’ Zen 2 processors.
The PlayStation 5 Pro is officially listed as supporting an enhanced version of GTA VI, but Sony and Rockstar have not explained what those enhancements include. The Pro version could potentially combine a stronger graphics presentation with a higher frame rate through its more powerful GPU and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, but this remains speculation until Rockstar publishes official technical information.
Rockstar’s previous console games have traditionally prioritized visual complexity and simulation over higher frame rates at their original launches. Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 initially operated at 30 FPS on consoles, with Grand Theft Auto V receiving 60 FPS modes when its PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions arrived years later. A launch day 60 FPS option for GTA VI would therefore represent a notable shift in the studio’s console strategy.
The rumor arrives shortly after GTA VI preorders opened at 79.99$ for the Standard Edition, while Rockstar has also confirmed that the initial retail box contains a download code rather than a physical disc. Performance details now remain one of the largest unanswered questions surrounding the release.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. Rockstar has not announced a PC version, official frame rate targets, resolution information, or a detailed comparison between the 3 console models.
A 60 FPS option on the standard PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X would be one of the most important technical announcements Rockstar could make before launch. The improvement would affect driving response, aiming, camera movement, animation clarity, and the overall feel of exploring Leonida.
However, Rockstar should avoid forcing the mode into the launch build if it cannot maintain a stable frame rate. An inconsistent 60 FPS target with severe visual reductions could provide a worse experience than a polished 30 FPS quality mode. A later performance update would be disappointing, but it would still be preferable to releasing a mode that frequently drops below its target.
The PlayStation 5 Pro will also face greater scrutiny if the base consoles achieve 60 FPS. Sony will need to demonstrate that the premium system offers meaningful advantages through higher resolution, stronger ray tracing, improved image reconstruction, or greater visual density rather than simply matching the performance mode available elsewhere.
Would you choose a 60 FPS performance mode with reduced visual quality, or play GTA VI at 30 FPS with the strongest graphics settings?
