FromSoftware Delays The Duskbloods to 2027 to Improve Multiplayer Combat and Balance

FromSoftware has officially delayed The Duskbloods, its upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, from its original 2026 release window to sometime in 2027. The announcement follows months of limited communication after the game's August network test, with the studio confirming that additional development time is necessary to refine combat mechanics, gameplay balance, and strategic depth. According to the official announcement, development has reached its final adjustment stage, but player feedback has encouraged the team to further improve the overall multiplayer experience.

The developer explained that its August 2026 network test demonstrated strong interest in the game's combat systems, tactical possibilities, and character customization. However, FromSoftware believes additional adjustments are necessary to ensure these mechanics work together effectively. Directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, The Duskbloods introduces a competitive multiplayer experience supporting up to 8 players, combining player versus player combat with encounters against powerful enemies. Players control supernatural warriors known as Bloodsworn, each possessing unique abilities and fighting styles, competing for a mysterious power called First Blood.

The delay comes shortly after community datamining revealed references to potentially 13 playable Bloodsworn characters. Although the findings suggested an extensive character roster and deeper progression systems, their accuracy remains unconfirmed. Balancing multiple characters across competitive and cooperative encounters could represent a considerable technical challenge, particularly for a studio primarily recognized for its challenging single player action RPGs. Nevertheless, Miyazaki previously clarified through Nintendo's official developer interview that FromSoftware remains committed to creating traditional single player experiences alongside its multiplayer projects.

The Duskbloods remains exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, with no confirmed release month or additional platform announcements. The studio has not indicated when its next gameplay presentation will take place.

Delaying The Duskbloods may ultimately benefit FromSoftware, particularly given the challenges of balancing competitive multiplayer with the demanding combat mechanics associated with its games. Unlike traditional Souls titles, where players can progress at their own pace, a multiplayer environment requires consistent character balancing, reliable online infrastructure, and meaningful gameplay variety. The August network test appears to have provided valuable feedback, and refining these systems before launch is preferable to introducing substantial changes after release. However, the transition toward a competitive multiplayer experience remains an ambitious direction for the studio, making the final execution especially important.

Is FromSoftware making the right decision by delaying The Duskbloods to 2027, or are you more interested in seeing the studio return to traditional single player Souls games?
