Elden Ring Surpasses 30 Million Units Sold Worldwide Three Years After Launch
FromSoftware has officially confirmed via X that Elden Ring has surpassed 30 million units sold globally, a milestone that underscores the monumental success of the studio's most ambitious and acclaimed title to date. The announcement comes a little over three years after the game’s original release in February 2022, marking Elden Ring as one of the best-selling and most influential action RPGs of the modern gaming era.
The game’s immense popularity stems from its seamless fusion of FromSoftware's trademark Soulslike mechanics with a vast open-world structure and intricate lore co-written by fantasy icon George R. R. Martin. This combination captivated millions, earning the title numerous Game of the Year awards and a permanent spot in the pantheon of genre-defining titles.
The franchise's momentum was sustained with the highly anticipated Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, which launched to great commercial success. Although updated numbers for the expansion haven’t been disclosed, it sold five million units within its first three days on the market, suggesting a current figure that could be approaching the 10 million mark—equating to a potential attach rate of around 1 in 3 among base game owners.
But Elden Ring is far from finished. In fact, the next chapter of the franchise is set to unfold in a new direction with the upcoming release of Elden Ring: Nightreign, a cooperative multiplayer spin-off that is set to debut in roughly a month. The game's system requirements were just revealed, indicating FromSoftware's intent to keep the experience accessible without compromising on the series’ signature depth and immersion.
Additionally, FromSoftware has unveiled an entirely new IP, The Duskbloods, exclusive to the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2 platform. Like Nightreign, it also features multiplayer elements. However, in a move to reassure longtime fans, the studio clarified that these multiplayer-focused projects do not indicate a permanent shift away from the single-player experiences that defined its legacy.
With Elden Ring’s astonishing sales, the success of its DLC, and the pipeline of future titles, FromSoftware has reaffirmed its place as one of the most creative and commercially formidable studios in the industry.
