Edge of Memories Developer Midgar Studio Shuts Down After Buyer Search Fails

Midgar Studio, the French developer behind Hover, Edge of Eternity and the upcoming Edge of Memories, has officially closed after a court ordered its liquidation. Founder Jérémy Zeler Maury confirmed through a LinkedIn statement that efforts to secure an acquirer had continued until the end of the legal process, but no agreement could be completed within the required timeframe.

"Today, Midgar Studio comes to an end. This is not the message I had hoped to write."
— Jérémy Zeler Maury

Founded in 2008, Midgar Studio spent 18 years creating games that combined French development sensibilities with influences from Japanese role playing games. Its catalogue included Hover, Edge of Eternity and Edge of Memories, alongside several prototypes and projects that never reached the public. Zeler Maury thanked the developers, partners and players who supported the studio while encouraging publishers and recruiters to consider the affected team members for future opportunities.

The closure forms part of the wider financial crisis affecting parent company Nacon. The publisher filed for insolvency on February 25, 2026, before entering judicial reorganisation proceedings on March 2. Spiders, Kylotonn, Cyanide and Nacon Tech subsequently filed for insolvency, while Midgar Studio began its own proceedings on May 26. Nacon remains operational under judicial supervision, with its observation period currently extended until September 2, 2026, while the company develops a financial recovery plan.

The future of Edge of Memories now remains unclear. The action RPG is still listed on Steam for release during Q4 2026, with Midgar Studio credited as developer and Nacon as publisher. However, neither the liquidation announcement nor Nacon’s latest corporate communications explain who will complete any remaining development, optimisation or support work following the studio’s closure.

Edge of Memories was intended to continue the universe established by Edge of Eternity with a more action focused combat system, an Unreal Engine 5 presentation and a fantasy world inspired by Japanese animation. Its soundtrack also involved Cédric Menendez, Emi Evans and Yasunori Mitsuda. The project had already received a playable Steam demo before the liquidation, suggesting that development had reached an advanced stage, but its final production status has not been publicly clarified.

Midgar Studio’s closure represents another significant loss for the European AA gaming sector. The studio consistently pursued ambitious role playing projects with a recognisable identity, even when operating with considerably fewer resources than larger publishers and developers.

Edge of Memories may still reach the market if Nacon retains the necessary production resources and the project is sufficiently complete. However, losing the original development team could affect final optimisation, quality assurance and support after release. Nacon now needs to provide players with a transparent update regarding the game’s status and the future of the intellectual property.

Should Nacon continue development of Edge of Memories with another studio, or would the project lose too much of Midgar Studio’s original identity?
