Ed Boon Confirms NetherRealm Is Working on Another Mortal Kombat, Says More Projects Are Also on the Stove

NetherRealm is officially not done with Mortal Kombat. In a new interview tied to the launch of Mortal Kombat II, series co creator Ed Boon confirmed that the studio is “definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game,” while also teasing that there is more happening behind the scenes beyond a single project. His comments arrive at a moment when fresh Injustice 3 rumors are circulating again, making it one of the clearest signals yet that NetherRealm’s next phase may be broader than fans expected.

That wording matters. Boon did not simply talk in vague future facing terms about the franchise. In the interview, he said NetherRealm is “definitely” pursuing another Mortal Kombat title and added that there are “a lot of pots on the stove,” including projects beyond games and into other forms of media. That suggests the studio is not just thinking about one follow up, but about a wider expansion plan for the brand and possibly for NetherRealm itself.

At the same time, this does not rule out Injustice 3. Recent reporting says rumors around a new Injustice entry have heated up again, with one report pointing to evidence from an artist résumé that suggests the game may be in development. That remains unconfirmed by Warner Bros. Games or NetherRealm, but Boon’s latest comments make it clear that even if Injustice 3 is real, Mortal Kombat is still very much active inside the studio’s plans.

The timing of all this is also boosted by the new movie. Mortal Kombat II is set to release in the United States on May 8, 2026, and early reception has been notably warmer than the response to the 2021 film, with reviews and audience reactions frequently calling out the stronger fights, bigger energy, and Karl Urban’s performance as Johnny Cage. That makes Boon’s tease especially effective, because it lands right as the franchise is getting a new wave of mainstream attention.

Boon also used the interview to talk a bit more freely about dream guest fighters, mentioning that he would love to see a Street Fighter character in Mortal Kombat and that both DC and Marvel characters could be fun to explore further. That is not a game announcement, but it does show that NetherRealm is still thinking in the crossover heavy, fan driven way that has helped define the modern Mortal Kombat era.

From a broader industry perspective, the most important takeaway is that NetherRealm sounds busy again. After months of uncertainty over whether the studio’s next move would be Injustice 3, another Mortal Kombat, or something less expected, Boon has now publicly anchored one part of the answer. Another Mortal Kombat is coming. The only real mystery now is whether it is the next game, or just one of several major announcements Boon says are on the way. That final point is an inference based on Boon’s wording and the current state of public reporting.

Are you hoping NetherRealm goes straight into a new Mortal Kombat, or would you rather see Injustice 3 arrive first before the next tournament begins?
