EA Details What’s Coming in the Skate Early Access Season 1 Update

Electronic Arts (EA) and developer Full Circle have officially revealed the first major update for Skate since its early access release, the highly anticipated Season 1 update. The rollout introduces new gameplay content, areas, cosmetics, and seasonal activities designed to keep players grinding through the streets for months to come.

The announcement was accompanied by a new trailer and a detailed blog post on the official Skate website, outlining everything players can expect. The update will feature new skate-able zones, player cosmetics, and the introduction of the Skate Pass, a progression system that brings daily, weekly, and seasonal challenges. Completing these tasks will reward players with in-game bonuses, while the premium Skate Pass tier adds exclusive daily grants and rewards for those who purchase it.

Season 1 will also debut limited-time events, starting with Skate-O-Ween, a Halloween-themed celebration that adds spooky visuals and challenges to the city. EA confirmed that future seasons will follow a similar structure, offering rotating areas, cosmetics, and seasonal activities to maintain a consistent stream of new content.

Despite a rocky critical reception, Skate’s early access launch has been a commercial success. According to Alinea Analytics, Skate achieved one of the highest player counts of August and ranked among the top-earning titles in September. However, the game has also drawn criticism from both media and fans for its live-service model and reliance on microtransactions - concerns highlighted in IGN’s early access.

With the Season 1 update setting the tone for future expansions, Skate now faces the challenge of retaining its impressive player base while proving it can deliver sustainable, engaging content beyond early access. Whether EA and Full Circle can maintain momentum will determine the long-term fate of this modern revival of a beloved skateboarding franchise.

What do you think about the direction EA and Full Circle are taking with Skate? Are live-service mechanics helping or hurting the series’ return?
