Ubisoft Acquires March of Giants From Amazon as Montreal Team Joins the Publisher
Ubisoft has officially announced the acquisition of the MOBA title March of Giants from Amazon, marking a significant shift for the project and its development team. Once the deal closes on its expected date of December sixteen twenty twenty five, the Montreal based studio behind the game will become part of Ubisoft. While ownership of the title will fully transition to Ubisoft, Amazon will continue to provide marketing support through Twitch as part of the agreement.
The acquisition was confirmed through an official press release in which Ubisoft stated that it views March of Giants as an innovative and differentiated project with strong potential to bring something new to existing MOBA fans while also attracting a broader audience. Ubisoft emphasized its ambition to grow the title into a successful and enduring live competitive game.
The development team behind March of Giants is led by creative director Xavier Marquis and senior production leader Alexandre Parizeau, both of whom previously held senior roles at Ubisoft. Marquis served as the original creative director on Rainbow Six Siege, while Parizeau was formerly the managing director of Ubisoft Toronto. Their return to Ubisoft represents a homecoming for two veterans with deep experience inside the company.
In a statement included in the press release, Marquis described the move as a full circle moment, noting that some of his most meaningful work was created during his previous time at Ubisoft. He expressed confidence that the publisher’s resources and experience would help unlock the full potential of March of Giants and elevate it to the next level. Parizeau echoed those sentiments, thanking Amazon for its support during the game’s early development and highlighting the closed alpha as a key milestone that demonstrated the project’s promise. He added that joining Ubisoft unites the team behind a shared long term vision for building one of the next great MOBAs.
Amazon leadership also addressed the transition. Steve Boom, vice president of audio, Twitch, and games at Amazon, stated that the company is proud of what the Montreal team accomplished and expressed confidence that the developers will continue to thrive under Ubisoft’s leadership.
This acquisition follows a turbulent period for Amazon’s gaming division. In October, Amazon laid off more than fourteen thousand employees, with a significant portion of the reductions affecting Amazon Game Studios. As part of that restructuring, development on New World Aeternum was shut down and a planned Lord of the Rings MMO was cancelled for the second time. While Amazon recently revealed two upcoming Tomb Raider projects at The Game Awards, the sale of March of Giants signals a continued narrowing of focus, with the company seemingly prioritizing established intellectual properties and multimedia adaptations such as Fallout, Wolfenstein, and Mass Effect.
From Ubisoft’s perspective, the acquisition represents an opportunity to strengthen its position in one of gaming’s most competitive genres. Chief executive officer Yves Guillemot stated that March of Giants has a real chance to bring something fresh and dynamic to players and help Ubisoft compete more aggressively in the MOBA space. He also emphasized his enthusiasm for welcoming back experienced developers whose ambition and creativity align with Ubisoft’s goal of delivering bold new experiences.
With Ubisoft taking ownership and Amazon remaining involved through Twitch marketing, March of Giants now enters a new phase of development. The move positions the title as a potentially important new intellectual property for Ubisoft while offering the Montreal team long term stability and the backing of a publisher with deep experience in live service games.
Do you think Ubisoft can successfully turn March of Giants into a major contender in the MOBA space, or is the genre already too crowded for new challengers?
