Dune Awakening Shows PS5 Pro Gameplay With Dynamic 4K at 60 FPS as Cross Play Is Confirmed
Funcom has released 7 minutes of new Dune: Awakening gameplay captured directly on PlayStation 5 Pro, providing one of the clearest looks yet at how the open world survival game will perform when it arrives on consoles on September 22, 2026. The footage debuted during Gamescom 2026, where players are also able to experience the PlayStation 5 version ahead of release.
Both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro will offer 2 graphics modes. Performance Mode targets 60 FPS at a dynamic 4K resolution, while Quality Mode targets 30 FPS at dynamic 4K. PlayStation 5 Pro will operate from a higher native rendering resolution in both modes and will receive additional visual enhancements when using Quality Mode, although Funcom has not yet provided the exact internal resolutions or detailed which graphical settings have been increased.
Funcom previously confirmed that the standard PlayStation 5 reaches its 60 FPS Performance Mode target using frame generation, while PlayStation 5 Pro targets 60 FPS without frame generation. Both consoles use upscaling for the final 4K presentation. The distinction gives the Pro version additional native performance headroom and should provide a cleaner image while maintaining the responsiveness expected from a 60 FPS mode.
The September console launch is also much more than a direct conversion of the existing PC release. Dune: Awakening will arrive with a complete single player mode, scalable difficulty settings, expanded gameplay customization, the conclusion of its current storyline and the content and improvements Funcom has introduced throughout the game's first year. This follows continued development of the PC version, including Update 1.4 and The Water Wars DLC, as Funcom has increasingly focused on giving players greater control over how they experience Arrakis.
Cross play between PC and consoles has now also been officially confirmed, addressing one of the most requested features following the console announcement. However, it will not be ready for the September 22 launch. Funcom says development is underway and cross play will arrive after launch, although the studio has not committed to a release date.
Gamescom also brought the announcement of the Filmic Archive DLC, which launches September 22 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox. Priced at $9.99, the cosmetic package includes equipment inspired by Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two, including the Aegis of the Unwalked Path armor, the Caladan Stormcoat and a 73 piece Sardaukar themed building set. Dune: Awakening will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S on September 22, while Deluxe and Ultimate Edition owners can begin playing 5 days earlier on September 17. The Xbox version will also join Xbox Game Pass on launch day.
Dune: Awakening targeting 60 FPS on PS5 Pro without relying on frame generation is arguably more interesting than the dynamic 4K headline. Open world survival games can place considerable pressure on both CPU and GPU resources, and Funcom appears to be using the additional PS5 Pro performance primarily to raise native image quality rather than simply reconstructing more frames. Cross play arriving later is unfortunate for launch, but confirming it now is important for a game whose long term value depends heavily on maintaining a connected and active community across platforms.
Would you prioritize the 60 FPS Performance Mode in Dune: Awakening, or choose the enhanced visuals of the 30 FPS Quality Mode on PS5 Pro?
