Danganronpa 2x2 Delayed to 2027 as GTA 6 Reshapes the Release Calendar
Danganronpa 2x2 was officially delayed from 2026 to early 2027, giving Gemdrops and Spike Chunsoft additional development time while moving the visual novel away from Grand Theft Auto VI. However, series creator Kazutaka Kodaka has now revealed a more personal reason behind the decision. He also wants enough time to play Rockstar Games’ next open world blockbuster.
During a recent interview, producer Shohei Sakakibara explained that the team naturally wanted more time to complete the game, but also preferred to avoid launching near a major AAA title. Kodaka then directly identified GTA 6 and admitted that working on Danganronpa 2x2 during its release would interfere with his own plans to experience the game.
"I wouldn’t have time to make the game while playing GTA 6, so it was inevitable that we moved the release time."
— Quote by: Kazutaka Kodaka
The comment is humorous, but it reflects the enormous commercial and cultural influence GTA 6 already holds over the gaming industry. Rockstar Games has officially scheduled the title for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The release has encouraged several publishers to move projects into earlier months or 2027 to avoid competing for player attention, media coverage, and consumer spending. Lords of the Fallen II was similarly moved into Q1 2027, although its developers also cited additional refinement time.
Danganronpa 2x2 includes an updated version of Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair alongside a new Slayhem scenario. Original mode retells the 2012 story with enhanced visuals and presentation, while Slayhem uses the same setting and characters to create a different chain of murders, victims, culprits, and mysteries. The new route is expected to provide approximately 35 hours of gameplay, compared with around 30 hours for Original mode.
The game also replaces the original side scrolling island navigation with a fully explorable 3D map and optional fast travel. Danganronpa 2x2 is scheduled for early 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. A specific release date has not been announced.
Kodaka’s explanation turns a conventional scheduling decision into a reminder that game developers are also players. The delay provides more production time while protecting Danganronpa 2x2 from a release expected to dominate gaming discussions throughout the holiday season.
Moving into early 2027 may provide better visibility, but the new window is rapidly becoming crowded as other publishers escape GTA 6. Danganronpa 2x2 will therefore need its new Slayhem storyline and modernized presentation to attract returning fans while separating itself from the original release.
Would you delay your own game to play GTA 6, or should developers remain focused on meeting their original release schedules?
