Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Officially Confirmed by CD PROJEKT RED and Studio TRIGGER at Anime Expo
In an electrifying announcement at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles, CD PROJEKT RED and renowned animation studio TRIGGER officially confirmed that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is now in development. The announcement, shared on Edgerunners’ official X account, marks a major reversal from the 2022 statement that suggested the original was a one-off project.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 will be a standalone 10-episode anime set in the gritty, neon-lit world of Cyberpunk 2077, though it will introduce a completely new storyline and characters.
“David’s story might be over, but there’s plenty more to discover in Night City,” said Bartosz Sztybor, Hugo Award-winning writer and producer at CD PROJEKT RED. “To again have the legendary animation studio TRIGGER along for the ride makes us so excited to introduce a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge — something unlike what we’ve done before.”
Sztybor returns to serve as showrunner, story writer, and producer, and he will be joined by Kanno Ichigo, lead character designer known for Promare and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, along with Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann, Promare) who will adapt the screenplay. The series will air exclusively on Netflix, though a release window has not been provided.
The original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners debuted in September 2022 and became an instant success, achieving a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Its release was strategically timed with Cyberpunk 2077's Patch 1.6, revitalizing the game’s player base and public perception. That update brought several new features to the game, including a Wardrobe system, cross-platform progression, multiple new weapons and Gigs, and light content tying in with the anime series.
Whether or not CD PROJEKT RED plans to tie in new Cyberpunk 2077 content with Edgerunners 2 remains uncertain. Given that the studio is now heavily focused on The Witcher 4, it seems unlikely — though nothing has been ruled out at this time.
With Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, CD PROJEKT RED and TRIGGER aim to delve deeper into the brutal yet captivating world of Night City, promising a new story that explores the themes of redemption and revenge. Fans of the first season can now look forward to another high-octane anime experience set in the dystopian sci-fi universe that has become one of gaming’s most compelling backdrops.
