Cyberpunk 2077 Surpasses 35 Million Copies Sold as CD Projekt RED Scales Up Development on Cyberpunk 2
CD Projekt RED has released its third quarter 2025 financial results, offering key updates on its current projects and providing a major milestone for Cyberpunk 2077. According to the official Q3 2025 earnings report, the studio’s once troubled sci fi RPG has now exceeded 35 million copies sold since its launch in December 2020.
The achievement comes nearly one year after the studio announced that Cyberpunk 2077 had reached 30 million units sold. The additional 5 million units sold within that span highlights the game’s continued commercial strength and its renewed reputation following years of patches, redesigns and systemic overhauls.
Few players will forget the chaos of Cyberpunk 2077’s launch in 2020. CD Projekt RED withheld PlayStation 4 and Xbox One review copies from media outlets, distributing only PC versions ahead of release. When the game launched, severe performance issues and bugs on last generation consoles led to one of the most controversial and damaging releases in the industry’s recent history. Refund waves, delistings and legal disputes followed.
Yet nearly five years later, Cyberpunk 2077 has undergone extensive transformation. It took three years for CD Projekt RED to deliver Version 2.0, but the result has been a revitalized game that many consider to be the definitive version of the original vision. The studio’s long term commitment has allowed Cyberpunk 2077 to rebuild trust and extend its lifespan well beyond expectations. The new sales milestone cements its recovery.
Despite the renewed success of Cyberpunk 2077, the true test for CD Projekt RED will come with The Witcher 4. Its launch will likely determine whether the developer has fully regained long term trust from players and investors. According to the report, the studio currently has 447 developers working on The Witcher 4, reinforcing its position as CDPR’s main development priority.
Meanwhile, development on the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, codenamed Project Orion and often referred to internally as Cyberpunk 2, continues to expand. The team now includes 135 developers across the Vancouver, Warsaw and Boston branches. The Boston branch was established specifically to support the Cyberpunk sequel and is gradually becoming a core site for the project. Once The Witcher 4 reaches completion, more of the company is expected to transition toward Project Orion’s full production phase.
Michał Nowakowski, joint chief executive officer of CD Projekt RED, expressed strong enthusiasm about Cyberpunk 2077’s ongoing success. “We are very happy and satisfied with the fact that despite the passage of time Cyberpunk 2077 remains such a well performing title and continues to attract new players,” Nowakowski said. “Sales of the game have exceeded 35 million copies, which testifies to the franchise’s enduring power and enables us to be even more audacious about charting its future.”
Cyberpunk 2077’s journey from one of the most controversial launches in modern gaming to a 35 million seller underscores the durability of the franchise and the strength of CD Projekt RED’s long term support strategy. With The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2 both progressing steadily, the studio is preparing for one of the most ambitious development periods in its history.
Do you think Cyberpunk 2 will launch in a more polished state from day one given CDPR’s experience, or will the studio face the same challenges again
