Cyberpunk 2077 Gets a Major PS5 Pro Upgrade on April 8 with PSSR 2.0, Ray Tracing Pro, 90 FPS Support, and More

Cyberpunk 2077 is receiving another major technical upgrade, this time built specifically for PlayStation 5 Pro owners. In a new PlayStation Blog post, CD Projekt RED confirmed that the update arrives on April 8, 2026 and introduces a wide range of enhancements designed to push Night City further on Sony’s upgraded hardware. According to the studio, the goal was to fully leverage PS5 Pro technology by delivering improved 4K image quality, stronger performance, more advanced ray tracing, and a broader set of graphics modes tailored to different player priorities.

One of the biggest upgrades is support for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, with the game now making use of PSSR as part of its PS5 Pro presentation. CD Projekt RED also confirmed significant improvements to ray tracing through the implementation of BVH8, or 8 way Bounding Volume Hierarchy, which the studio says enables upgraded ray traced lighting, shadows, and reflections. This is a meaningful step because lighting has always been one of Cyberpunk 2077’s strongest visual pillars, and Night City’s neon heavy atmosphere benefits greatly from more advanced global illumination and reflective detail.

The update introduces 3 PS5 Pro specific display modes, giving players much more flexibility depending on whether they want maximum visual fidelity, a balanced image, or the highest frame rate possible. The most advanced option is Ray Tracing Pro, which enables all available ray tracing features including reflections, ambient occlusion, skylight, shadows, and emissive lighting. This mode targets 40 FPS on VRR enabled displays and 30 FPS on displays without VRR.

The second option is the standard Ray Tracing mode, which acts as the middle ground. CD Projekt RED describes it as the sweet spot between visuals and speed, offering selected ray tracing enhancements while targeting a smoother 60 FPS experience. That alone will likely make it the most appealing setting for many players who want better lighting and reflections without sacrificing responsiveness.

Then there is Performance mode, which focuses on raw fluidity. On displays that support VRR, CD Projekt RED says Cyberpunk 2077 can now reach up to 90 FPS on PS5 Pro while still maintaining strong image fidelity. For an RPG that has already gone through such a long technical redemption arc, that is a substantial milestone and one more reminder that CD Projekt RED continues to refine the game well beyond what many expected after launch.

This upgrade is also notable because it reinforces how committed CD Projekt RED remains to improving Cyberpunk 2077 even after confirming that the game will not receive more traditional expansions. Instead of new DLC, the studio is extending the title’s life through technical polish and platform specific optimizations, and in this case the PS5 Pro version now looks like one of the most feature rich console editions of the game to date.

For PlayStation players, this is the kind of upgrade that can genuinely change how the game feels. Between PSSR, expanded ray tracing, a 60 FPS ray traced option, and a performance ceiling of 90 FPS on VRR displays, Cyberpunk 2077 on PS5 Pro appears to be receiving a serious visual and performance refresh rather than a minor compatibility patch. It is another strong example of how long tail support can continue to reshape a game’s reputation years after release.
