Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Is the Start of a Franchise, Confirms Creator; Post-Launch Content Teased
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has proven to be one of 2025’s breakout successes. The debut game from French developer Sandfall Interactive not only launched to critical acclaim but did so alongside The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered - a juggernaut release in its own right - without losing momentum. Now, as awards season approaches, the consensus across the industry is that Expedition 33 could be a strong contender for Game of the Year.
In a new interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, studio founder Guillaume Broche confirmed that Expedition 33 is just the beginning.
“Yeah, so Clair Obscur is a franchise name. Expedition 33 is one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise. Exactly what it will look like and what the concept will be is still too soon to announce, but what is sure is that this is not the end of the Clair Obscur franchise.”
This revelation has fans speculating that Sandfall may adopt an anthology-style structure, much like the series that inspired it - Final Fantasy. Interestingly, the French team recently visited Square Enix’s offices in Japan, where the two studios reportedly engaged in a “creatively rich exchange of ideas.”
While future entries are still a mystery, Broche also teased post-launch content for Expedition 33:
“There might be something. We may be cooking.”
Whether that means new story-driven content, expanded features, or gameplay additions remains unclear, but it’s a strong hint that Sandfall plans to keep supporting the game beyond its launch.
