Borderlands 4 Launches on PC, Instantly Becomes the Biggest Borderlands Game Ever on Steam

Borderlands 4 has officially launched on PC, and the reception is already historic. As reported by IGN, just one hour after going live, the game shattered franchise records by becoming the most played Borderlands title on Steam, ever.

According to live data from SteamDB, Borderlands 4 reached 201,273 concurrent players at launch. To put that in perspective, the previous high was held by Borderlands 2, with a peak of 124,678 players. Borderlands 3, by comparison, only reached 93,820 concurrent players at its peak.

This makes Borderlands 4 not only a significant milestone for Gearbox Software but also a clear sign of renewed fan enthusiasm after the somewhat divisive reception of Borderlands 3.

PC players can dive into Borderlands 4 right now via Steam or the Epic Games Store, while console players on PlayStation and Xbox will have access later today depending on regional release times. The official Borderlands Twitter account confirmed the staggered rollout across time zones.

It’s also worth noting that Steam numbers only represent a fraction of the total player base, as console concurrent player data isn’t publicly shared. With console launches imminent, the total number of players jumping into Pandora’s mayhem-filled universe is expected to climb significantly higher.

After the mixed reception of Borderlands 3, Gearbox had a lot to prove with this latest entry. If the record-breaking Steam launch is any indication, Borderlands 4 is already shaping up to be the revitalization of the franchise that fans were hoping for.
