Borderlands 4 Developer Says Fixing PC Performance and Crashes Is ‘Top Priority’

Borderlands 4 has been one of the strongest-selling launches of the year, but performance problems - particularly on PC - have dominated community discussions since release. In its first formal post-launch communication, Gearbox Software has directly addressed the concerns, reassuring players that fixing performance and stability is now the studio’s “top priority.”

Strong Sales and Community Engagement

Before discussing the issues, Gearbox began by thanking players for supporting the game at launch, indirectly confirming Alinea Analytics’ earlier report that Borderlands 4 has already sold at least two million units, generating over $150 million in revenue. Since release, players have collectively:

  • Looted 764 million items

  • Driven 65 million kilometers

  • Defeated 55 million bosses

  • Failed 7 million times

The studio described this as proof of the community’s enthusiasm and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a long-lasting experience.

Performance Issues Take Center Stage

Gearbox’s message then focused on the most pressing issue: technical performance, with an emphasis on PC stability.

“We know some PC players are running into bugs and crashes. We hear you. Updates to improve stability and performance already started rolling out over the weekend and another is coming this Thursday. This is our top priority.”

In addition to PC patches, Gearbox confirmed that a Field of View (FOV) slider option is being tested for consoles, responding to player feedback. The team also acknowledged reports of console performance concerns, which are under investigation with further updates planned.

This communication appears to contrast with previous remarks from Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, who suggested that performance issues were being overstated. By comparison, the studio’s broader message now positions stability fixes as the highest development priority.

Roadmap and New SHiFT Code

Gearbox reiterated that launch is “just the beginning” for Borderlands 4. The first year of post-launch content includes:

  • Two Story Packs

  • Four Bounty Packs

  • Multiple free updates

To celebrate the launch and reward early adopters, Gearbox also released a new SHiFT code, unlocking the following items:

  • 1 Vault Hunter Skin usable by Vex, Rafa, Amon, and Harlowe

  • 1 Legendary Ripper Shield, scaling to your Vault Hunter’s level (minimum Level 25) via the Reward Center in the Equipment tab

  • 2 ECHO-4 Drone Skins: “Break Free” and “Kn0x”

Looking Ahead

Gearbox closed by stating its commitment to “delivering an incredible experience” for the Borderlands community. While the launch has been commercially successful, the studio’s ability to stabilize the game especially on PC - will likely determine whether Borderlands 4 sustains its strong start and maintains long-term player confidence.

Do you think Gearbox can resolve the technical issues quickly enough to retain Borderlands 4’s momentum, or will the rocky launch overshadow its early success?
