Bloober Team Reveals Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, a Psychological Thriller Adventure Starring Ro Laren

Paramount Games Studio has officially revealed Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, a new story driven third person action adventure game developed by Bloober Team, the studio behind the Silent Hill 2 remake. Announced during IGN Live Showcase 2026, the game is scheduled to launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC.

Star Trek: Shadow Frontier places players in the role of Ro Laren, the Bajoran character originally portrayed by Michelle Forbes in Star Trek: The Next Generation and later Star Trek: Picard. Forbes is returning to the role, giving the game an immediate connection to one of the franchise’s most respected legacy characters.

The story begins after Ro Laren crashes on a remote planet controlled by an unusual consciousness. What first appears to be a beautiful and mysterious world quickly becomes a hostile psychological maze, where the environment itself turns against her. As Ro investigates the planet, her memories begin to distort, reality becomes unstable, and every discovery pushes her deeper into the darkness surrounding both the world and her own past.

The game leans into classic Star Trek themes of duty, survival, discovery, and moral pressure, but Bloober Team is clearly adding its own psychological thriller identity to the experience. The planet wide entity at the center of the story can manipulate terrain and weaponize the ecosystem, creating a world where exploration is both necessary and dangerous. Creatures born from the environment patrol the area and attack unexpectedly, forcing players to decide when to fight and when to evade.

Ro Laren will need to rely on observation, careful movement, and iconic Star Trek technology to survive. The Tricorder can be used to scan and analyze objects, while the Phaser serves both as a combat tool and a way to solve environmental puzzles. Bloober Team says the game will balance exploration, puzzles, combat, and cinematic storytelling, rewarding patience, awareness, and smart decision making.

The official reveal trailer for Star Trek: Shadow Frontier gives the first look at the game’s atmosphere, tone, and thriller focused interpretation of the Star Trek universe.

Shawn Kittelsen, SVP, Head of Creative and Production at Paramount Games Studio, said Bloober Team was selected because of its experience creating atmospheric and immersive games.

"We’ve long admired the way Bloober Team crafts deeply immersive, atmospheric experiences that keep players on the edge of their seats. For Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, it was essential to partner with a studio that could both honor that legacy and push it forward. We have full confidence in Bloober’s ability to deliver a game that does justice to the Star Trek name while bringing something bold and new to the beloved franchise."

Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno also explained that the studio is approaching the project as both science fiction fans and creators known for psychological horror. According to Babieno, the goal is not to replace Star Trek’s identity, but to add a darker and more suspenseful layer to the universe.

"We’ve been waiting a long time to finally share what we’ve been working on. As lifelong fans of science fiction, Star Trek has always held a special place in our hearts. By combining that passion with what we do best, horror, we’ve partnered with Paramount to create something truly unique: a new adventure set in a beloved universe, enriched with our own signature layer of dark, psychological thriller. We’re genuinely excited about this journey, and our hope is to honor the legacy of Star Trek in a way that feels both respectful yet refreshingly different."

The choice of Ro Laren as the lead character is especially interesting. Ro has always been one of Star Trek’s more complex figures, shaped by trauma, duty, rebellion, and difficult personal choices. Placing her in a psychological survival story gives Bloober Team a strong narrative foundation, especially if the game explores how the planet manipulates her memories and forces her to confront unresolved parts of her past.

For Star Trek fans, Shadow Frontier could represent a major shift in how the franchise is adapted into games. Rather than focusing on large scale starship command, tactical fleet combat, or traditional space exploration, this project narrows the lens to a personal survival story. That could help the game stand apart while still using Star Trek’s core ideas of identity, morality, science, and unknown worlds.

The game is already available to wishlist on Steam, where preliminary PC system requirements have also been listed. The early minimum requirements include an AMD Ryzen 2700 processor, 8GB RAM, and an Nvidia GTX 1660 graphics card.

Star Trek: Shadow Frontier is shaping up to be one of the more unexpected licensed games on the 2027 calendar. With Bloober Team bringing its psychological horror expertise, Paramount Games Studio building a new gaming presence, and Michelle Forbes returning as Ro Laren, the project has the potential to deliver a more intimate and unsettling Star Trek experience than fans usually see.

The biggest question now is how far Bloober Team will push the darker tone while still preserving the spirit of Star Trek. If the studio can balance psychological tension with the franchise’s legacy of discovery and character driven storytelling, Star Trek: Shadow Frontier could become a bold new direction for the series in gaming.

Are you excited to see Star Trek explore a darker psychological thriller direction with Ro Laren, or do you prefer Star Trek games to focus more on exploration and starship adventure?
