Beyond Good & Evil 2 Reportedly Shifts to Solo Adventure With Spider Man Inspired Combat

Ubisoft's long awaited Beyond Good & Evil 2 has reportedly undergone another major gameplay redesign, shifting toward a narrative driven single player adventure with optional cooperative multiplayer and combat inspired by Insomniac Games' Marvel's Spider Man. Despite being announced 18 years ago, the ambitious science fiction project reportedly remains in preproduction, with at least 250 developers involved at Ubisoft Montpellier as the company struggles to establish a definitive direction.

According to an extensive investigation by French publication Origami, Beyond Good & Evil 2 has repeatedly changed its gameplay structure since its original announcement in 2008 and subsequent reveal in 2017. Between 2019 and 2022, Ubisoft reportedly envisioned an interconnected multiplayer universe featuring numerous planets, dynamically generated activities and social experiences inspired by Destiny and Fortnite. The concept was designed around players meeting organically, exploring together and participating in activities without traditional mission structures.

Over time, the project transitioned through several multiplayer configurations before adopting its latest reported direction, which prioritizes a complete solo experience without mandatory internet connectivity. Cooperative gameplay would remain available, while a stronger narrative focus would bring the sequel closer to a conventional action adventure RPG.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 Development Changes

Development Period Reported Gameplay Direction
2019 to 2022 Connected multiplayer universe inspired by Destiny and Fortnite
Subsequent Revisions Smaller multiplayer groups and 4 player cooperative gameplay
Later Development 2 player cooperative experience
Current Reported Direction Solo adventure with optional cooperative gameplay
Combat Inspiration Insomniac's Marvel's Spider Man
Development Status Preproduction, targeting approval for full production

These details originate from developer sources cited by Origami and have not been officially confirmed by Ubisoft.

The combat comparison with Marvel's Spider Man suggests that Ubisoft is experimenting with more fluid, cinematic encounters, potentially emphasizing mobility, environmental interaction and responsive action mechanics. However, no recent gameplay footage has been released to demonstrate these changes, making it impossible to determine how closely the final combat system might resemble Insomniac's games.

The project's technical foundation reportedly remains one of its strongest elements. Ubisoft's proprietary Voyager engine was developed to support enormous environments, seamless transitions between planetary surfaces and space, and highly detailed interactive worlds. Nevertheless, ambitious technology has not translated into a finalized gameplay structure.

Origami reports that the development team is approaching another internal approval milestone, known as a gate, which could determine whether the project advances into full production. Previous milestones have reportedly been delayed by continued changes to core gameplay concepts, leaving the team working through an extended preproduction cycle.

The situation is particularly concerning given Ubisoft's ongoing corporate restructuring, which has involved canceled projects, studio closures and revised investment priorities. Beyond Good & Evil 2 survived the company's earlier restructuring, with creative director Fawzi Mesmar reaffirming the team's commitment to completing the game in January 2026.

Despite those assurances, some developers reportedly fear that the upcoming milestone could become critical to the project's survival. Ubisoft has not announced a cancellation, confirmed the latest gameplay changes or provided a release window.

The official Beyond Good & Evil 2 website continues describing the game as an ambitious action adventure RPG set in System 3, where players explore a multicultural science fiction universe filled with space pirates, political conflicts and mysterious civilizations. Whether that original vision survives the latest redesign remains uncertain.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 demonstrates how technological ambition can become a development liability when a project lacks a consistent gameplay identity. Ubisoft appears to have spent years experimenting with multiplayer systems, planetary exploration and large scale social environments without establishing a clear direction for the player experience.

The reported shift toward a narrative driven solo adventure could be a positive development, particularly for fans of the original game's storytelling, exploration and memorable characters. Drawing inspiration from Marvel's Spider Man could also introduce more engaging combat, provided the mechanics complement the game's science fiction setting rather than simply following established industry trends.

However, the greatest challenge is no longer technical capability. After 18 years of development uncertainty, Ubisoft must demonstrate that Beyond Good & Evil 2 has a coherent creative vision capable of justifying further investment. The upcoming production milestone could become one of the most important decisions in the project's troubled history.

Would you prefer Beyond Good & Evil 2 as a story focused single player adventure with optional cooperative gameplay, or do you think Ubisoft should have continued developing its original massive multiplayer universe?
