ArcheAge S Targets 2027 as a True PC MMORPG Sequel
XL Games and Kakao Games have announced ArcheAge S: Strait of Freedom, a new PC MMORPG scheduled for a global release in 2027. Unlike ArcheAge Chronicles, which is being developed as a smaller scale online action RPG with console support, ArcheAge S is positioned as a direct continuation of the original MMORPG formula.
According to the official publishing announcement, ArcheAge S is being designed specifically around PC hardware and controls rather than a multiplatform development strategy. Kakao Games has secured domestic and global publishing rights, while XL Games will lead development under project director Kim Kyung tae.
Kim previously worked as the original planning director and producer for ArcheAge, giving the project leadership with direct experience of the systems that defined the 2013 release. The developers intend to preserve the franchise’s central identity while modernizing its design for current MMORPG players.
The original ArcheAge earned recognition for combining sandbox freedom with structured questing, player economies, naval exploration, housing, farming, trading, PvP, PvE, and large scale faction warfare. However, its reputation was eventually damaged by an increasingly demanding Labor system and monetization mechanics that many players considered pay to win.
ArcheAge Chronicles follows a different direction. The project, previously announced as ArcheAge 2, is currently presented as a console focused online action RPG featuring smaller cooperative groups rather than the persistent sandbox systems expected from a traditional MMORPG. That repositioning disappointed parts of the original community and created demand for a more authentic successor.
ArcheAge S appears designed to address that gap while allowing XL Games to operate 2 different interpretations of the franchise. Chronicles can target action RPG players across multiple platforms, while Strait of Freedom focuses on the dedicated PC MMORPG audience.
"We are committed to faithfully preserving the identity of the original ArcheAge while delivering a new experience."

No trailer, gameplay footage, combat details, business model, or specific release date has been revealed. With the game currently targeting 2027, XL Games and Kakao Games will need to demonstrate how the sequel modernizes ArcheAge without repeating the progression and monetization problems that weakened the original.
ArcheAge S arrives during a renewed push to modernize the MMORPG market, with projects such as Guild Wars 3 also attempting to challenge systems that have remained largely unchanged for more than 10 years. ArcheAge already had the sandbox foundation many modern MMOs still struggle to reproduce. The real test will be whether XL Games can protect that freedom with fair monetization, accessible progression, reliable servers, and sustainable live service management.
Can ArcheAge S restore the sandbox freedom of the original game, or has the franchise already lost too much player trust?
