AMD CEO Lisa Su Wanted Ryzen 7 5800X3D Revival as a Final Gift to AM4 Gamers

AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su played an important role in bringing back the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, giving longtime AM4 users another opportunity to upgrade their gaming PCs without replacing their motherboards or DDR4 memory. The decision resulted in the Ryzen 7 5800X3D 10th Anniversary Edition, launched in June 2026 to celebrate 10 years of the AM4 platform, with AMD describing its return as a final gesture of appreciation for loyal customers.

During an interview with Japanese publication Mynavi TECH+, AMD Senior Director of Client Product Management Travis Kirsch revealed that Lisa Su was among the people who originally proposed reviving the processor several years ago. Production of the original Ryzen 7 5800X3D had already ended, requiring AMD to restart manufacturing operations before introducing the anniversary model.

"It was like a final gift to our loyal users."

Interestingly, Kirsch clarified that the decision was made before the current memory market disruptions and was not originally intended as a solution to rising DDR5 prices. Nevertheless, its timing has become particularly relevant as gamers face increasingly expensive platform upgrades, a situation AMD had previously acknowledged when exploring ways to restore AM4 processor availability.

Originally introduced in April 2022, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D became AMD's first desktop processor featuring 3D V Cache technology. Its additional 64MB of stacked cache increased total L3 capacity to 96MB, delivering substantial gaming improvements without requiring a new motherboard or memory standard. The anniversary edition maintains the original architecture and performance specifications while introducing commemorative packaging and a Carbice Ice Pad thermal interface.

Specification Ryzen 7 5800X3D Anniversary Ryzen 7 7700X3D
Architecture Zen 3 Zen 4
Socket AM4 AM5
Cores / Threads 8 / 16 8 / 16
Maximum Boost 4.5 GHz 4.5 GHz
Total Cache 100 MB 104 MB
Memory Support DDR4 DDR5
TDP 105 W 120 W
Launch Price $349 $329

Specifications and launch prices are based on AMD's official Computex 2026 announcement. The anniversary edition does not introduce a new CPU architecture.

Kirsch also emphasized that 3D V Cache can help maintain gaming performance when using slower memory configurations by reducing the frequency of system memory accesses. This advantage becomes increasingly valuable as DDR5 prices continue facing supply pressure, encouraging existing AM4 owners to extend the lifespan of their systems instead of purchasing new DDR5 platforms.

AMD's commitment to platform longevity is continuing with AM5, which the company has officially pledged to support through 2029. However, Kirsch did not confirm that the anniversary edition represents the absolute end of AM4 product development. His comments primarily describe the motivation behind reviving the 5800X3D rather than announcing a formal platform discontinuation.

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D remains one of AMD's most important gaming processors, not simply because of its performance, but because it demonstrated the long term value of platform compatibility. Allowing users to extend an older motherboard and DDR4 memory investment represents a practical advantage at a time when complete PC upgrades are becoming considerably more expensive.

However, the anniversary edition's $349 launch price presents an interesting dilemma. While the newer Ryzen 7 7700X3D costs $329, moving to AM5 also requires DDR5 memory and a compatible motherboard. For existing AM4 owners, the 5800X3D can therefore remain a financially attractive upgrade, particularly when replacing an older Ryzen 2000 or 3000 Series processor.

Lisa Su's decision reinforces an important principle for the PC industry: meaningful hardware innovation should not always require replacing an entire platform.

Are you still gaming on AMD AM4, and would you upgrade to the Ryzen 7 5800X3D in 2026, or would you rather invest in a completely new AM5 system?
