Alkimia Interactive Reveals Artistic Direction Behind Gothic Remake Ahead of THQ Nordic Showcase
As anticipation builds for the upcoming THQ Nordic Showcase in early August, developer Alkimia Interactive has released a new behind-the-scenes video offering a closer look at the artistic philosophy driving the Gothic Remake. Titled "Making Of: Art Design," the video dives into the team’s creative decisions and the balancing act of modernizing a beloved classic without losing its soul.
“We also decided very early on, we are not making an HD version of the art style of the original, that’s not our goal,” explains Reinhard Pollice, studio head and game director at Alkimia Interactive. Alongside him, Art Director Daniel Candil outlines the studio’s vision: delivering a grounded, realistic world while faithfully retaining the fantastical and magical atmosphere that defined the original Gothic.
First announced in 2019 through a surprise teaser demo, the Gothic 1 Remake has seen a long road to development. It wasn't officially greenlit until 2020, and development has been steadily progressing ever since. In February 2025, players were given another opportunity to try the remake during Steam Next Fest, with Alkimia actively collecting feedback and promising improvements based on user input.
In May 2024, the studio suggested a March 2025 launch window, but no firm release date has been confirmed. With the THQ Nordic Showcase now just weeks away, fans are hoping that a final release date for Gothic Remake will be revealed during the event.
Until then, this new “Making Of” episode reassures long-time fans that the remake is not simply a graphical overhaul but a re-imagining that respects the tone, depth, and identity of the original game—an effort to bring the cult classic to new life for both returning fans and newcomers.
