Xbox Targets 500 Million Daily Players by 2030 Despite Revenue Decline

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has reportedly set an ambitious goal for Microsoft’s gaming business to reach 500 million daily players by fiscal year 2030. The target was included in an internal memo obtained by The Verge, where Sharma outlined a multiyear plan focused on restoring growth, improving profitability, strengthening Xbox hardware, expanding major franchises, and transforming Minecraft into a broader creation platform.

The memo states that Xbox currently reaches more than 100 million daily players, more than 500 million monthly players, and almost 1 billion players annually across its console, PC, mobile, cloud, publishing, and gaming services businesses. Microsoft previously confirmed that its gaming portfolio surpassed 500 million monthly active users when Sharma was appointed CEO in February 2026.

Xbox Player Metric Current Scale Fiscal Year 2030 Ambition
Daily Active Players More than 100 million 500 million
Monthly Active Players More than 500 million Not specified
Annual Active Players Nearly 1 billion Not specified
Required Daily Player Expansion Current baseline Approximately 5 times
Approximate Annual Compound Growth Required Not applicable Approximately 49.5%

eaching 500 million daily players would require Xbox to expand its current daily audience by approximately 5 times within 4 years. This would represent compound annual growth of approximately 49.5%, making the target substantially more demanding than the sustained double digit player growth described in Sharma’s memo. The company would effectively need to convert the scale of its current monthly audience into daily engagement.

Sharma divided the strategy into 3 stages. Xbox intends to return to player and revenue growth by the end of fiscal year 2027, convert its strategic investments into stronger revenue acceleration during fiscal years 2028 and 2029, and scale the successful areas of the business by fiscal year 2030. The final stage is expected to combine the 500 million daily player ambition with stronger engagement and margins described as competitive with leading companies across the gaming industry.

Strategic Priority Xbox Objective
Core Strengthen the Xbox platform with console as its foundation
Content Develop major games into global entertainment franchises
Creation Transform Minecraft into a leading creator platform
Connection Expand the worlds and communities connected to major Xbox franchises

Console hardware remains central to the plan despite Microsoft’s expansion across PC, mobile, cloud gaming, and competing platforms. Sharma told employees that console continues generating most Xbox revenue and remains the foundation of the company’s player community. This position follows months of strategic changes intended to rebuild the Xbox identity after years of inconsistent messaging around hardware, exclusives, subscriptions, and multiplatform publishing.

The company also plans to increase investment in Minecraft as a creation ecosystem, potentially positioning it more directly against platforms such as Roblox. Xbox will additionally use King and Microsoft Casual Games to increase its presence in mobile and casual gaming. Sharma revealed that 3 Xbox franchises already generate more than US$1 billion annually, although the memo did not identify them. Call of Duty and Candy Crush are likely candidates, while the third franchise remains unconfirmed.

The growth objective arrives during a difficult financial period for Xbox. Microsoft reported that Xbox revenue declined 10% during fiscal year 2026 Q4, while Xbox content and services revenue also declined 10%. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the company is making changes across content, platforms, and operations to reset the business for long term growth, with a return to growth expected during fiscal year 2027.

The strategy also follows the wider Xbox reset and renewed focus on exclusives, major franchises, and potential acquisitions. Microsoft has restructured studios, reduced employment, adjusted Game Pass, and placed greater emphasis on franchises including Halo, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, Gears, Forza, Minecraft, and Call of Duty. Xbox must now demonstrate that these changes can produce sustainable engagement instead of temporarily increasing player numbers through individual launches or subscription promotions.

The player target may also require Xbox to rebuild confidence in Game Pass. The service reportedly lost millions of subscribers following its 50% price increase, demonstrating how pricing and perceived value can quickly affect engagement. Reaching 500 million daily users will require growth across multiple channels rather than depending on console sales or Game Pass alone.

Xbox already operates one of gaming’s largest ecosystems, but 500 million daily players is an exceptionally aggressive target. Monthly users do not automatically become daily users, particularly when the portfolio includes players who engage only occasionally with annual Call of Duty launches, Minecraft, Candy Crush, Game Pass, or individual Bethesda and Blizzard releases.

Microsoft has the franchises, distribution channels, and financial resources required to pursue this scale. However, growth cannot come only from expanding availability. Xbox must create stronger reasons for players to return every day through successful games, stable communities, creator tools, mobile growth, competitive pricing, and a console platform that retains its identity.

Minecraft may become the most important part of that strategy. Turning it into a deeper creator ecosystem could provide recurring engagement similar to Roblox, but Microsoft must balance monetization with the accessibility and creative freedom that made Minecraft successful.

Can Xbox realistically reach 500 million daily players by 2030, or is the target too ambitious for its current growth trajectory?
