Xbox Marketing VP Pushes Back on Gears of War: E Day PS5 Report After Podcast Trailer Shows PlayStation Logo

Xbox is once again facing an awkward messaging problem, this time around the console exclusivity of Gears of War: E Day. The Coalition’s next entry in the franchise was officially confirmed during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 as an Xbox console exclusive for Xbox Series X|S and PC, but the story around how and when the PlayStation 5 version was dropped continues to raise questions.

Ahead of the showcase, Jeff Grubb reported that the decision to remove the PlayStation 5 version had only just been made. The Verge’s Tom Warren later backed up that information, prompting Xbox VP of Games Marketing Aaron Greenberg to dispute the claim through a response on X.

"Hey Tom, I can confirm this is not true. We just limited the knowledge of this news to a very small internal group. Intention was to share this news first with our players and everyone watching showcase."
— Aaron Greenberg

When Warren asked about the timing of the decision, Greenberg said the change was part of the new Xbox leadership’s fast moving strategy under CEO Asha Sharma.

"A lot has changed since Asha came into role 107 days ago. We are moving fast and it’s frankly pretty energizing inside the hallways here. I was made aware of these exclusives roughly a month in advance. Hope that helps!"
— Aaron Greenberg

Greenberg’s explanation suggests the decision was not made at the very last moment, but instead kept within a limited internal group until the showcase. That would normally be a fair explanation, especially given how quickly Xbox appears to be changing direction under Sharma. The problem is that another piece of evidence appeared almost immediately after the showcase.

The latest episode of the official Xbox Podcast focused on the Gears of War: E Day deep dive that followed the main presentation. During that episode, the trailer was shown again, and viewers noticed that the PlayStation 5 logo was still present. Microsoft later removed the podcast and uploaded a corrected version without the PS5 logo, but by then the clip had already spread online.

That mistake has made it harder for Xbox to control the message. If the exclusivity decision had been known internally for around a month, many players are asking why a PlayStation 5 logo was still present in official video material after the showcase. For critics, it supports the earlier insider reports that the PS5 version was dropped very late. For Xbox, it looks like a coordination issue at the exact moment the company is trying to rebuild confidence in its platform strategy.

The situation also reflects the larger change happening inside Xbox. Sharma’s leadership has already pushed major decisions, including walking back part of the Game Pass price increase after the earlier 50 percent hike caused a major subscriber loss, and refocusing Xbox around selected console exclusives. Microsoft has also clarified that future exclusivity will be handled on a case by case basis, with multiplayer games remaining multi platform while some single player titles stay exclusive to Xbox consoles and PC.

Gears of War: E Day is now one of the key examples of that new strategy. Alongside Clockwork Revolution, it signals that Xbox is once again willing to use major first party games to give players a reason to stay inside the Xbox ecosystem. That matters because the Gears franchise has always been one of the clearest symbols of Xbox identity, especially from the Xbox 360 era.

Still, the communication around E Day has been messy. The official announcement says the game is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PC, but the appearance of the PS5 logo in the Xbox Podcast trailer has created doubt over how recently the platform decision changed. Even if Greenberg is correct that the news was restricted internally, the error shows how difficult it can be to shift strategy quickly across a large publishing organization.

For Xbox fans, the return of a major console exclusive is likely welcome news. For PlayStation players, it is another reminder that Microsoft’s platform strategy is no longer easy to predict. Some Xbox owned games are coming to PS5, including Halo: Campaign Evolved, Fable, State of Decay 3, and Senua. Others, like Gears of War: E Day and Clockwork Revolution, are staying tied to Xbox consoles and PC.

That mixed approach may make business sense, but it also puts more pressure on Xbox to communicate clearly. If the company wants players to trust its new direction, platform messaging needs to be precise from the start. Accidental logos, deleted podcast uploads, and conflicting interpretations only make that harder.

Gears of War: E Day launches on October 6, 2026 for PC and Xbox Series X|S.

Do you believe Gears of War: E Day was always meant to stay Xbox console exclusive, or does the removed PlayStation 5 logo make the late decision reports more convincing?
