Warhorse Confirms New Kingdom Come Game Is an Open World RPG Targeting 2027 to 2028

Warhorse Studios has moved to reassure Kingdom Come: Deliverance fans after recent wording around its next project created some uncertainty. A week ago, the studio revealed an ambitious development pipeline featuring 2 major projects: a new Kingdom Come game and a Middle earth open world RPG. While the Middle earth project naturally attracted major attention, fans were more cautious about the phrasing used for the next Kingdom Come title.

The concern was simple. Warhorse had not clearly called the project Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3, leaving some players wondering whether the studio was planning something completely different, possibly a smaller experiment or even a different genre within the same universe.

During a recent community livestream, Warhorse Community Director Tobias Stolz Zwilling clarified one major detail. The new Kingdom Come game will remain an open world RPG, just like its predecessor. That confirmation should ease concerns from fans who were worried that Warhorse might move away from the historical role playing formula that made the series stand out.

"We announced that we are working on 2 major projects. This is new for Warhorse Studios, because it is the first time we are fully developing 2 simultaneous projects at once. You can expect 2 open world RPGs. One is a new Kingdom Come game, and the other is a Middle earth open world RPG."

That confirmation is important for Warhorse because Kingdom Come: Deliverance has always occupied a distinct position in the RPG market. Instead of chasing fantasy monsters, magic systems, or simplified action mechanics, the series built its identity around historical immersion, grounded combat, social systems, and a strong commitment to medieval realism. Keeping the next game within the open world RPG space means Warhorse is preserving the core formula that helped the franchise build a dedicated player base.

Zwilling also emphasized that Kingdom Come: Deliverance remains a passion project for the studio. The series was originally created by Daniel Vávra, and Warhorse has continued expanding the universe through games, comics, music, vinyl releases, and other related projects. The next Kingdom Come team will be led by Prokop Jirsa, Lead Designer of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, who is stepping into the creative director role for the new project.

"Kingdom Come: Deliverance remains a passion project for the studio. The series was created by Daniel Vávra and is now being carried forward by almost 300 people at Warhorse. We are still expanding the Kingdom Come universe through comics, music, vinyl releases, and other projects. Prokop Jirsa, Lead Designer of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, will be leading the Kingdom Come team as creative director."

The most notable update is the release window. According to Zwilling, the new Kingdom Come game is currently planned for the next fiscal year, meaning the target window sits between April 2027 and March 2028 if development proceeds as expected. However, Warhorse is not ready to fully reveal the project yet, and the studio is clearly choosing to hold back details until it can make a proper announcement.

"The new Kingdom Come game is planned for the next fiscal year. Phil Rogers, CEO of Embracer Group, said that if everything goes right, it could come in the next fiscal year, which means the target is not the current financial year but the one after it. We do not have more details to share yet, beyond the fact that it is an open world RPG. We will reveal more when the time is right, and we plan to announce it properly and with impact when that moment comes."

That timeline is interesting because Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 launched in February 2025 and received updates and downloadable content support for nearly 1 year. A new Kingdom Come release arriving as early as 2027 would be a surprisingly fast turnaround for a studio known for large, detailed RPGs. This naturally leaves room for speculation.

One possibility is that the new game could be smaller in scale than Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, which would support the idea of a spin off or a separate story set within the same universe. Another possibility is that early development began before Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 was completed, allowing Warhorse to move faster than expected. The fact that the studio has not called the project KCD 3 also keeps the door open for a new protagonist, a different region, or a different narrative structure.

At the same time, Warhorse’s clarification should calm the biggest concern. The new Kingdom Come title is not being positioned as a genre shift. It is still an open world RPG, and the studio is still treating the franchise as one of its central creative pillars. For fans who value Kingdom Come for its realism, immersion, and grounded medieval design, that is the most important takeaway.

The bigger question now is how Warhorse balances 2 major open world RPG projects at the same time. Developing a new Kingdom Come game while also working on a Middle earth open world RPG is a major operational step for the studio. If managed well, it could place Warhorse in a stronger position as one of the most important RPG developers in Europe. If stretched too thin, it could also create production pressure across both projects.

For now, the next Kingdom Come game remains early in its public communication cycle. It has a target window, a confirmed genre, and a creative lead, but Warhorse is not ready to reveal its full identity. Whether it becomes Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3, a spin off, or another type of Kingdom Come story, fans can at least expect the next chapter to stay within the open world RPG foundation that made the series successful.

Would you prefer the next Kingdom Come game to continue Henry’s story, or would you like Warhorse to introduce a new protagonist in the same historical universe?
