Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Will Feature an All-New Ending, Producer Confirms
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined will not only modernize one of Square Enix’s most ambitious RPGs but also bring brand-new content for both newcomers and long-time fans. During an interview with Game Informer at Square Enix’s Tokyo offices in Shibuya, producer Takeshi Ichikawa confirmed that the upcoming remake will include a completely new ending, never before seen in any version of the game.
“Reimagined follows the narrative of the original story, but depending on some of the player choices, players will get to see a new conclusion that’s never been seen before in previous iterations,” Ichikawa explained. “So, even players who have played previous versions of Dragon Quest VII will still get to have this fresh narrative experience with Reimagined.”
This new narrative element ensures that Dragon Quest VII Reimagined offers something exciting even for veterans who completed the original 2000 PlayStation release or the 2016 Nintendo 3DS remake. The fresh ending ties into the remake’s core philosophy of preserving the soul of the original while evolving its presentation, mechanics, and structure for modern platforms.
Beyond the new story content, Reimagined introduces major gameplay enhancements aimed at improving pacing and accessibility. The traditional turn-based combat system has been revamped for more dynamic encounters, featuring smarter enemy behaviors, improved party AI, and an expanded range of special moves. Players can now attack and defeat weaker enemies directly on the field, skipping unnecessary battles and maintaining momentum during exploration.
The remake also implements a redesigned tab-based user interface, simplifying navigation through the game’s many menus while maintaining the series’ signature charm. Combined with refined visuals and rebalanced gameplay, Reimagined promises to deliver the most polished and approachable version of Dragon Quest VII to date.
Dragon Quest VII Reimagined launches on February 5, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. It continues Square Enix’s ongoing effort to refresh its iconic RPG series following the recent Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake and Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, which modernized the first trilogy while preserving their timeless feel.
With Reimagined, Square Enix appears ready to reintroduce one of the franchise’s most expansive and narrative-rich adventures to a new generation of players, this time with a surprising twist waiting at the end.
