Team Ninja Says Nioh 3 Still Has Room to Grow Despite Strong Reception
Even after the strong reception surrounding Nioh 3, Team Ninja is not pretending the game is beyond criticism. In a recent interview with GamesRadar, studio head and producer Fumihiko Yasuda openly admitted that while the latest entry is “a great game,” it is “not perfect,” and that the team already sees multiple areas where future titles can improve.
That kind of honesty stands out, especially this soon after release. Yasuda explained that Team Ninja wants to take the lessons learned from Nioh 3, particularly its open field direction, and apply them more effectively in whatever comes next. Rather than framing the game as a finished formula, he described it more like an important step forward that still leaves room for refinement.
One of the clearest areas Yasuda highlighted was worldbuilding. According to the interview, Team Ninja feels it succeeded in making the game dense and immersive, but did not go far enough in conveying the logic and narrative behind its environments, yokai placement, and artistic identity. That is a meaningful point because it suggests the studio is not only focused on combat and systems, but also on how the world itself communicates story and atmosphere.
The team is also aware of criticism around enemy variety. Producer Kohei Shibata acknowledged that point in the same interview, making it clear that the feedback has been heard. At the same time, the wording strongly suggests this is more likely to shape future games than trigger a major post launch overhaul of Nioh 3 itself.
From a broader perspective, these comments are encouraging because they show Team Ninja is treating Nioh 3 as a foundation to build on rather than a finished answer. The studio clearly believes the game works, but it also seems aware that stronger environmental storytelling, more distinctive artistic logic, and a broader enemy mix could elevate the series even further. For fans, that is probably a healthier signal than a studio insisting everything already landed exactly as intended.
Do you agree with Team Ninja’s self assessment of Nioh 3, or do you think the game already delivers everything fans should want from the series?
