Sword Sage: Awakening Blends Chinese Mythology, Martial Arts and Science Fiction
Publisher 4Divinity and developer Sword Panda Limited have released a new story trailer for Sword Sage: Awakening, an upcoming third person action RPG that combines Chinese mythology, fast sword combat, Taoist magic, mechanical technology, and science fiction. Players take control of Pei Sanniang, a novice Yaoguai Vanquisher from the Yuangong Sect, as she travels across a world transformed by forbidden divine knowledge.
The story takes place in Jiannandao, a fantastical land where mythology and advanced machinery have developed together. Approximately 1,000 years before the events of the game, the drunken Supreme White Gibbon Sage revealed celestial books containing power and knowledge that humanity was never intended to possess. The discovery disrupted the natural order, causing environmental disasters and widespread monster infestations. Rather than surrendering, the people of Jiannandao created advanced mechanical technologies to protect their communities and survive the continuing calamities.
The new Sword Sage: Awakening story trailer follows Pei Sanniang as she confronts supernatural Yaoguai, investigates folklore inspired mysteries, and travels through enormous mechanical structures. Sword Panda describes the journey as a road movie style adventure where Chinese mythology meets science fiction, with the visual direction moving between ancient settlements, ruined landscapes, colossal machines, and creatures inspired by traditional Zhiguai tales.
Combat combines conventional swordsmanship with martial arts, mystical artifacts, and Taoist spells. Pei Sanniang uses a secret Yuangong Sect technique called Evade Cyan, Strike Red, which appears to reward players for reading enemy attacks and responding with correctly timed defensive and offensive actions. The trailer shows rapid dodges, parries, sword combinations, aerial movement, powerful kicks, and magical abilities against both human sized opponents and much larger monsters.
The footage may immediately remind some players of modern Soulslike games, particularly through its precise defensive timing and large boss encounters. However, the official Steam page describes Sword Sage primarily as a fast action RPG, and the trailer suggests a more mobile combat system built around continuous attacks, martial arts combinations, and aggressive movement. Its exact structure, difficulty, progression systems, and approach to exploration remain unclear.
Sword Sage: Awakening is the first game from Chengdu based Sword Panda Limited, which was established in November 2022. The studio describes the project as a Triple I production, meaning it is designed with greater scope and investment than a conventional independent game while remaining below the budget of a traditional AAA release. Its core team includes former Ubisoft developers with experience across Far Cry 3, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, The Division, F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch, Skull and Bones, and the Might and Magic series.
The game enters a market that has become increasingly receptive to Chinese developed action RPGs, Black Myth: Wukong surpassed 30 million sales, proving that a game deeply rooted in Chinese mythology can achieve major international success. Other projects, including WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers and Where Winds Meet, have also helped expand global interest in Chinese folklore, martial arts, and regional fantasy settings.
Sword Sage: Awakening is currently confirmed for PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. The developer has not announced a launch window, console versions, pricing, system requirements, or a public demo.
Sword Sage: Awakening already has a strong visual identity. The combination of Taoist magic, Chinese monsters, traditional martial arts, and enormous mechanical creations gives it more personality than another action RPG built entirely around familiar medieval fantasy.
Its main challenge will be proving that the combat has enough depth and responsiveness to compete in an increasingly crowded genre. Strong graphics and mythology can attract attention, but the final game will depend on enemy design, animation quality, precise controls, progression, and encounter variety. Sword Panda has assembled a team with relevant experience, but its debut project remains ambitious for a relatively young studio.
Does the combination of Chinese mythology, martial arts, and science fiction make Sword Sage: Awakening stand out, or do you need to see more uninterrupted gameplay first?
