Square Enix Reboots Dragon Quest XII as Beyond Dreams After 5 Years of Silence

Dragon Quest XII has returned to the spotlight in a way few fans expected. During the Dragon Quest 40th Anniversary broadcast, Square Enix confirmed that the game originally known as Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate has been scrapped in its previous form and restarted from scratch. The project is now officially titled Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams, marking a major creative reset for the next mainline entry in one of Japan’s most important RPG franchises.

The announcement comes after nearly 5 years of limited public updates. Dragon Quest XII was first presented during the series’ 35th Anniversary celebration, but since then, fans had seen very little of the game. That silence created growing concern around the project, and the latest broadcast finally explained why development had gone quiet for so long.

During the presentation, series creator Yuji Horii and series executive producer Yosuke Saito confirmed that the original version of Dragon Quest XII faced several development hurdles. After internal evaluation, the team decided to restart development completely. While this means the game will take longer to release than originally expected, Square Enix appears confident that the reboot was necessary to protect the long term future of the franchise.

The reboot also brings a major identity change. Dragon Quest XII is no longer using The Flames of Fate subtitle. Instead, the game is now called Beyond Dreams, a title directly connected to its new protagonist. According to details shared during the broadcast, the hero is troubled by strange visions in his sleep, and those dreams will become the starting point for a much larger adventure.

This change may also suggest that Square Enix has adjusted the tone of the project. The original The Flames of Fate announcement positioned Dragon Quest XII as a darker entry for the series, but Beyond Dreams appears to shift toward a brighter sense of adventure and possibility. Horii described the protagonist’s visions as the beginning of a grand journey and a hopeful future, suggesting a more balanced direction that still respects Dragon Quest’s classic identity.

Square Enix also released a new look at the rebooted game through the Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams reveal trailer. While the game still appears to be far from release, the trailer gives fans the first meaningful confirmation that development is moving forward after years of uncertainty.

Beyond Dreams is also being positioned as a landmark release for the series because it will carry forward the legacy of 2 legendary creators who are no longer with us. The game will continue featuring the classic character design identity associated with Akira Toriyama, alongside music from Koichi Sugiyama. Both creators played defining roles in shaping Dragon Quest’s visual and musical identity, making this next entry especially meaningful for long time fans.

At the same time, Square Enix says Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams will introduce new features never before seen in the series. The company has not fully detailed these systems yet, but the reboot suggests the team is willing to make meaningful changes rather than simply produce a traditional follow up. For a franchise built on legacy, familiarity, and generational loyalty, that balance between preservation and modernization will be critical.

The 40th Anniversary broadcast also included another major announcement for Dragon Quest fans. Square Enix revealed a new spin off titled Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, which the team hopes to release before Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams. The teaser did not include gameplay, but it confirmed that the game is coming soon to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo Switch.

The new Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World teaser trailer gives fans another project to watch while the next mainline Dragon Quest continues development. This also gives Square Enix a practical way to keep the franchise active during the long wait for Beyond Dreams.

For Dragon Quest fans, the reboot of Dragon Quest XII is both disappointing and encouraging. Losing 5 years of progress on the original project is a major development setback, especially for a series that does not release new mainline entries frequently. However, the decision to restart development also shows that Square Enix understands how important this game is. Rather than push forward with a version that was not working, the team chose to rebuild the project around a new concept.

Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams is still far from release, and fans should not expect a major new update soon. Even so, the confirmation that development is now moving forward gives the franchise a clearer path after years of silence. If Square Enix can successfully combine the emotional legacy of Toriyama and Sugiyama with meaningful new ideas, Beyond Dreams could become one of the most important Dragon Quest releases in decades.

Do you think Square Enix made the right decision by rebooting Dragon Quest XII from scratch, or would you have preferred the studio to continue with The Flames of Fate?
