Sony Reportedly Revives Killzone With Remake or Remaster Planned Before Horizon 3

Sony may be preparing to bring Killzone back after almost 13 years, with a new report claiming that Guerrilla Games is working alongside an external studio on a remake or remaster of the PlayStation shooter franchise. The project is reportedly in the very early stages of production, meaning an official reveal is unlikely anytime soon, but the most surprising detail is that the Killzone project is currently expected to arrive before Horizon 3. Sony and Guerrilla Games have not officially announced the project, so all development details should currently be treated as unconfirmed.

According to the original report from MP1st, Guerrilla is contributing to the project alongside a studio outside Sony's first party network. It remains unclear which Killzone game is being rebuilt, and the report does not confirm whether the project is technically a full remake or a more conservative remaster. The original Killzone from 2004 would be an obvious candidate, but that remains speculation rather than confirmed information. The last major entry in the franchise was Killzone Shadow Fall, which launched alongside PlayStation 4 in November 2013 and served as one of Sony's early technical showcases for the console.

People Can Fly has emerged as a possible candidate for the external developer, although there is currently no confirmation connecting the studio directly to Killzone. What is confirmed is that People Can Fly entered an agreement with Sony Interactive Entertainment in March 2025 to develop a prototype known as Project Delta using intellectual property owned by Sony. The project operates under a work for hire development model, but neither Sony nor People Can Fly has disclosed which franchise Project Delta represents. Connecting Project Delta to Killzone therefore remains speculation until either company provides additional information.

The reported development schedule is equally interesting. Killzone was apparently intended to become one of Guerrilla's next priorities after Horizon Hunters Gathering, with part of the studio expected to move onto the shooter project once work on the multiplayer Horizon title progressed. However, reports in August claimed Horizon Hunters Gathering was undergoing significant changes following negative feedback from private testing, potentially delaying the point at which additional Guerrilla developers could move onto Killzone. Earlier this year, Horizon Hunters Gathering entered its second closed playtest with new Hunters and additional story content, while Guerrilla officially describes the project as a 3 player cooperative action game for PlayStation 5 and PC.

The report also claims Horizon 3 is expected to follow the Killzone project rather than arrive before it. That would represent an unexpected shift for Guerrilla after more than a decade focused primarily on Horizon. Sony has not formally announced Horizon 3, although the continuation of Aloy's main story has long been expected following Horizon Forbidden West, while Guerrilla continues expanding the franchise through Horizon Hunters Gathering and other projects. With the reported Killzone project still extremely early in production, however, development priorities could change considerably before either game is officially revealed.

A Killzone revival would also mark a significant change in direction for Guerrilla itself. In 2024, studio art director Roy Postma explained that the developer deliberately moved away from Killzone because the team wanted something different after years spent creating the dark science fiction shooter series.

"We were done with it as a team. As a studio, we needed to refresh the palette."

Killzone has nevertheless remained visible through smaller appearances. Most notably, the franchise crossed over with Helldivers 2, with Arrowhead later bringing its Killzone content back permanently through a Legendary Warbond. That collaboration demonstrated that Sony was still willing to use the intellectual property despite the absence of a standalone Killzone game since 2013.

Bringing Killzone back as a remake or remaster could be a smart way for Sony to test whether meaningful demand still exists before committing to an expensive completely new installment. The PlayStation portfolio has changed dramatically since Killzone Shadow Fall, and Sony currently lacks a major first party military science fiction shooter carrying the same identity. The bigger surprise is the reported position ahead of Horizon 3. If that development order holds, it suggests Sony sees enough value in reviving older PlayStation intellectual property to temporarily interrupt Guerrilla's long running Horizon focus. For Killzone fans who have spent more than a decade assuming the series was finished, even a remake would represent a major change.

Would you rather see Sony remake the original Killzone first, or should Guerrilla return with an entirely new Killzone game built for the current PlayStation generation?
