Silent Hill f Producer Says Positive Reception Was a Surprise, But Future Games Won’t Follow the Same Formula

It seems not even the developers of Silent Hill f anticipated the strong positive response the game has received. During an IGN Japan livestream at Tokyo Game Show 2025, producer Motoi Okamoto admitted he was surprised by how well the latest installment in the series was received by both critics and fans.

“I’m grateful that it was rated higher than I’d expected,” Okamoto said. “I think you’ll understand if you play it, but since it’s a game with a lot of challenges, I thought there might be some pros and cons, but it’s been very well received, and it has a Metascore of 86, the same as the Silent Hill 2 remake. Well, I was really surprised.”

Despite this success, Okamoto clarified that Silent Hill f’s formula will not necessarily be the blueprint for future installments:

“We’ll be putting out something different, with a different flavor. We want to explore all sorts of different aspects of game design and story.”

He later reinforced this perspective in a tweet on X, explaining that the series will not adhere to a single gameplay style:

“As I said in the interview, not all future Silent Hill games will have the same gameplay as f, but rather I want the series to always be challenging in a good way, so that players can enjoy a different flavor of gameplay with each installment.

Of course, there are some things that will remain the same, the most important of which is the quality of the story. I am convinced that a psychological story is essential to what makes Silent Hill unique, and I will continue to focus on that point and release future titles with confidence.”

Silent Hill f’s unexpected critical acclaim has breathed new life into Konami’s long-dormant horror franchise. With both the Silent Hill 2 remake and Silent Hill f sitting at an impressive Metascore of 86, the series is regaining momentum after years of uncertainty.

Okamoto’s comments make it clear that while Silent Hill will remain firmly rooted in psychological storytelling, gameplay and mechanics will continue to evolve and diversify with each release. This approach may help the franchise avoid stagnation while offering fans new ways to experience horror, tension, and narrative depth.

The Silent Hill community now waits to see what “different flavors” Konami has in store for its future projects.

What do you think? should Silent Hill stick closer to the formula of Silent Hill f, or is experimenting with new directions the right move for the franchise?
