Next God of War Rumor Points to Faye Led Story, East Asian Mythologies, and a Talking Sword

A fresh wave of reports suggests Sony Santa Monica’s next God of War project may take the franchise in a very different direction. According to a new report from Mp1st and claims shared by Reddit user IntrinsicGamer, the next entry allegedly expands beyond the Norse world, explores multiple mythologies, and may become the first major title in the modern series not to center on Kratos as the primary playable lead. The reporting around the project remains unconfirmed, so for now this should be treated strictly as a rumor.

The biggest reported shift is that the game may star Faye rather than Kratos. That would be a major change for the series and could finally give players a direct look at one of the most important but least explored figures in the modern God of War arc. Faye’s legacy has shaped both the 2018 reboot and God of War Ragnarök, but most of her story has existed in memories, hints, and aftermath rather than in playable form. If this rumor proves accurate, Sony Santa Monica may be positioning the next title as both an expansion of the franchise universe and a narrative bridge that revisits how key events and relationships were set into motion.

The details being circulated are also far more unusual than what fans may expect from the series. The Reddit follow up claims the game will include a talking sword and a companion described as a gelatinous cube, while also exploring several mythologies with Mayan elements reportedly involved. Those details are strange on paper, but that does not necessarily place them outside the franchise’s broader creative direction, especially as God of War has increasingly leaned into mythological reinterpretation, symbolic storytelling, and larger universe building in its Norse era.

Where the rumor becomes especially interesting is in Mp1st’s additional reporting. While the outlet could not independently verify every claim from the Reddit post, it said it had heard that several East Asian mythological elements are part of the new game, specifically including Chinese and Japanese mythology. That would mark one of the boldest thematic expansions the series has attempted so far and could open the door to a very different visual identity, enemy design language, and world structure from what players experienced in either the Greek or Norse saga.

The reported inclusion of Tyr also adds another layer of intrigue. Tyr’s role in Ragnarök already positioned him as a figure tied to travel, diplomacy, and a wider mythological horizon beyond the nine realms. If this new project truly touches multiple cultural pantheons, Tyr would be one of the most natural connective characters for that transition. In that sense, the rumor does not feel completely disconnected from where Santa Monica left the larger universe, even if the tonal addition of a talking sword and a cube like companion sounds much more experimental than the studio’s recent work.

From a franchise strategy perspective, a Faye led spinoff or prequel could also be a smart move. It would allow Sony Santa Monica to broaden the reach of God of War without forcing the mainline Kratos narrative to immediately escalate again after Ragnarök. More importantly, it gives the studio room to explore fresh combat design, new character dynamics, and mythological settings while still operating inside one of PlayStation’s most valuable gaming brands. For fans of narrative driven action games, that kind of pivot could be a strong way to keep the series evolving rather than repeating its most familiar beats.

For now, though, there is no official announcement, no trailer, and no confirmation from Sony Santa Monica. Until that changes, this remains one of the more compelling rumors currently circulating around PlayStation’s first party pipeline. Still, if even part of it turns out to be true, the next God of War could end up being one of the franchise’s most ambitious reinventions yet, trading a single mythology focus for a broader mythological crossover and giving one of the series’ most mysterious characters a long overdue spotlight.

Would you like to see God of War move beyond Kratos for a full game, or do you think the series should keep him at the center no matter how the mythology expands?
