PlayStation Removes Region Restrictions for PC Games, Ending Global Access Limitation Saga
In a welcome and long-overdue development, Sony appears to have begun lifting regional restrictions on its PC ports of major PlayStation titles, signaling a shift toward a more globally accessible ecosystem for its first-party games.
For years, PlayStation's decision to bring critically acclaimed exclusives to PC platforms such as Steam has been largely praised by gamers, until region locking and account-linking policies began to undermine the goodwill. This issue came to a head with Helldivers 2, where Sony attempted to mandate a PlayStation Network (PSN) login for Steam players, effectively blocking access in over 100 countries where PSN isn’t available.
However, this restrictive approach seems to be coming to an end.
Region Locks Lifted for Multiple High-Profile Titles
According to a recent discovery by Wario64, region restrictions have now been removed from the following titles:
God of War: Ragnarok
The Last of Us Part II Remastered
Marvel's Spider-Man 2
Helldivers 2
This move follows the release of Days Gone Remastered, which launched on PC without any region locks, further suggesting that Sony has shifted its stance on global availability.
A Necessary Course Correction
Sony’s initial region-locking strategy baffled many. It undermined the very essence of PC gaming’s global platform by excluding gamers without PSN access. Even more confusingly, titles only published by Sony, such as Stellar Blade, were subjected to the same restrictions.
With digital distribution allowing global access by default, blocking users in regions where PSN doesn’t exist appeared counterintuitive especially given the company’s broader push toward multi-platform development.
This policy reversal not only enhances Sony’s image but also expands its potential user base and revenue from the ever-growing global PC market. It’s a practical and reputational win.
The Future of PlayStation on PC
If this new direction holds, we may finally see PlayStation titles enjoy the same global accessibility as their Xbox and third-party counterparts on PC. It’s an encouraging sign that Sony is willing to listen to player feedback and adapt.
While no official statement has been made by PlayStation as of this writing, the silent removal of region locks speaks volumes and players around the world are taking notice.
