PlayStation Quietly Confirms Firewall Ultra Shutdown Through an Updated 2023 Blog Post

PlayStation has officially confirmed that Firewall Ultra will shut down on September 17, 2026, but instead of publishing a fresh announcement, the company inserted the notice into an existing 2023 PlayStation Blog post that was originally used to promote the game’s launch and post launch roadmap. The updated note states that online features for Firewall Ultra will end on September 17, 2026, and because the title requires an online connection to function, the game will no longer be playable after 10:00 a.m. PDT that day. The same post now carries an updated publication line showing it was revised in March 2026.

What makes the situation stand out is not only the shutdown itself, but how quietly the message was delivered. Rather than placing the notice in a dedicated service update or publishing a separate community facing post, Sony effectively attached it to a 3 year old article about launch content. For a live service title that depends entirely on online access, that approach is likely to frustrate players who expect a clearer and more visible communication trail around end of service dates. The language on the updated blog leaves no ambiguity on the result, however. Once the servers are turned off, Firewall Ultra becomes entirely unplayable.

There is also an important correction to make around the game’s store status. At the moment, Firewall Ultra still appears to remain listed on the PlayStation Store in multiple regions, with the store page itself carrying the shutdown notice and still offering both the Standard Edition and Digital Deluxe Edition for purchase. That means the title does not appear to have been fully delisted yet, even though its long term playability now has a confirmed end date.

The shutdown is not entirely surprising given the fate of developer First Contact Entertainment. The studio announced in late 2023 that it would close by the end of that year, citing a lack of support for VR in the broader market. With the team gone, the long term future of Firewall Ultra had already looked uncertain. Still, the decision to bury the announcement inside an old promotional blog post adds a layer of awkwardness to what was already a disappointing outcome for PS VR2 owners who bought into one of the headset’s headline exclusives.

The broader optics are not great for PlayStation’s VR strategy either. Firewall Ultra was positioned as a major PS VR2 multiplayer shooter, and its shutdown will remove one of the platform’s more visible first party published online titles. When that kind of game goes dark, communication matters just as much as the technical process itself. From a community and brand standpoint, this kind of announcement deserved a more direct spotlight than a quiet edit on an old roadmap page.

For players who already own the game, the key date is now set. Firewall Ultra will stop working on September 17, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. PDT, which is September 18, 2026 at 1:00 a.m. in Taiwan time. After that point, the game will no longer be playable because it requires online connectivity at all times.

Do you think PlayStation handled the Firewall Ultra shutdown appropriately, or should service closure notices always get their own dedicated announcement?
