PayPal Now Limited to Six Currencies for Steam Purchases, Affecting Users Worldwide
A post on Reddit reveals that PayPal is no longer processing Steam purchases in currencies outside of six supported options: Euros, Canadian Dollars, British Pound Sterling, Japanese Yen, Australian Dollars, and United States Dollars.
The screenshot shows a statement from Steam Support explaining that PayPal’s acquiring bank for certain currencies terminated its processing of transactions related to Steam in early July 2025. This decision immediately affected Steam purchases using PayPal in all currencies other than the listed six.
“In early July 2025, PayPal notified Valve that their acquiring bank for payment transactions in certain currencies was immediately terminating the processing of any transactions related to Steam. This affects Steam purchases using PayPal in currencies other than EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD, and USD,” the statement reads.
Valve added that it hopes to offer PayPal for other currencies in the future, but the timeline remains uncertain. The company is also evaluating the addition of other payment methods for affected customers. In the meantime, Steam recommends using a different payment option, such as adding funds to a Steam Wallet.
This is the first official acknowledgment from Valve regarding the PayPal limitation. Users had already been voicing concerns on the Steam forums since early July, with reports of failed transactions in unsupported currencies. One forum user claimed to have successfully made a PayPal purchase in a now unsupported currency just three days before July 12, 2025, suggesting the change was implemented abruptly.
The exact reason for PayPal’s acquiring banks blocking these transactions remains unclear. The timing, however, has led some to speculate about a potential connection to recent controversies surrounding payment processors and their influence on game platforms. In particular, some believe it could be related to the ongoing campaign urging platforms such as Steam and Itch.io to remove certain types of adult or NSFW content.
While no direct link between the policy change and these industry pressures has been confirmed, the move leaves a large number of international Steam users without access to one of the most popular payment methods.
How do you think this PayPal limitation will affect Steam’s global user base, especially in regions where PayPal was a primary payment method?
