Onimusha: Way of the Sword Shows a More Aggressive Genma as September 25 Date Holds

CAPCOM has shared another look at Onimusha: Way of the Sword during its latest Spotlight presentation, introducing a powerful new Genma named Dohatsu ten while reaffirming that the long awaited action game will launch on September 25, 2026. The footage provides a broader overview of Miyamoto Musashi, his supernatural battle against the Genma, his rivalry with Sasaki Ganryu, and the dark fantasy version of Edo period Kyoto that players will explore across locations inspired by landmarks such as Kiyomizu dera and Yasui Konpiragu.

The most important addition was Dohatsu ten, a powerful Genma capable of combining considerable strength with rapid sword attacks. CAPCOM describes the creature as a relentless opponent whose weapon becomes increasingly dangerous after being stained with Musashi’s blood. The enemy can also absorb souls during combat, further increasing its power and forcing players to respond before the encounter escalates. The new battle can be seen in the official game overview trailer, which presents Dohatsu ten immediately pressuring Musashi with a sequence of fast slashes and aggressive movement.

The footage is particularly notable after players criticized the low enemy aggression found in the currently available demo. Although many praised the weight of the sword combat, defensive options, atmosphere, and visual presentation, some believed regular Genma waited too long between attacks and did not sufficiently pressure Musashi into using the complete combat system. CAPCOM previously responded by explaining that the demo was designed to showcase a wider selection of abilities and included skills that would normally become available later in the game. Producer Akihito Kadowaki also promised that regular Genma and bosses would provide a stronger challenge in the complete release.

Dohatsu ten supports that promise by appearing significantly more active than many of the enemies encountered during the early demo. However, the trailer frequently cuts between attacks and cinematic angles, making it impossible to confirm whether this intensity represents the complete battle or selected moments arranged for marketing. The real test will be whether normal encounters also force players to parry, deflect, dodge, reposition, use Oni powers, and manage multiple threats rather than reserving the strongest aggression for boss fights.

The broader combat system remains focused on deliberate sword clashes rather than the stamina driven structure commonly associated with Souls games. Musashi can parry incoming strikes, deflect projectiles, perform Issen critical attacks, use supernatural Oni Armaments, absorb souls, break enemy defenses with Oni Strength, and use Oni Agility to move rapidly through combat and selected environmental sections. The free Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo provides approximately 30 minutes of the opening adventure and includes a battle against Sasaki Ganryu, although progress does not transfer into the complete game.

CAPCOM also used the presentation to eliminate speculation that Onimusha might launch earlier than expected. Several retailer listings had briefly displayed September 4, leading to suggestions that the publisher wanted to escape an extremely crowded end of September schedule. The Spotlight instead repeated the official September 25 date, confirming that Onimusha will arrive only 1 day after both Control Resonant and Silent Hill: Townfall.

That release cluster will place 3 major narrative driven action and horror games within approximately 24 hours of each other, creating immediate competition for player spending, streaming attention, reviews, and media coverage. Onimusha still enters the period with several advantages, including the return of a dormant CAPCOM franchise, a free demo that has already passed 1 million downloads, the recognizable presence of Miyamoto Musashi, and a combat system designed around the studio’s extensive action game experience.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches on September 25, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game represents the first completely new main entry in the franchise since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams arrived in 2006.

Dohatsu ten is the kind of enemy CAPCOM needed to show after the demo feedback. Musashi already possesses an impressive collection of defensive and offensive tools, but those systems will only reach their full potential when enemies attack frequently enough to demand timing, observation, and meaningful decisions.

The new footage provides a positive signal without completely resolving the concern. Bosses are naturally expected to be faster and more dangerous than regular opponents, so the complete game must demonstrate that common Genma can also challenge players without becoming repetitive damage sponges. Strong difficulty options and more coordinated enemy behavior would allow CAPCOM to preserve accessibility while still providing experienced action players with a reason to master every mechanic.

Keeping the September 25 release date is also a confident decision. Onimusha will face direct competition from Control Resonant and Silent Hill: Townfall, but moving earlier could have disrupted manufacturing, certification, marketing, and final development. CAPCOM appears willing to trust the strength of the franchise revival instead of allowing a crowded schedule to dictate its launch plans.

Does Dohatsu ten convince you that CAPCOM has addressed the enemy aggression concerns, or do you need to see more regular Genma combat before launch?
