Of Ash and Steel Showcases Lush Open World in New Trailer, Playtest Sign-Ups Now Live

During tinyBuild Connect 2025, Fire & Frost revealed a stunning new trailer for Of Ash and Steel, their upcoming third-person open-world RPG. Titled the “World Overview,” the trailer gives players a narrated tour of Grayshaft, one of the seven islands that make up the Kingdom of the Seven and the primary setting for this expansive old-school RPG. Alongside the trailer, the studio also opened sign-ups for a playtest on the game’s official Steam page, inviting adventurers to try a slice of the game before release.

A World of Myth, Mystery, and Conflict

Narrated by Tristan, a laid-back cartographer and the protagonist of the game, the trailer presents Grayshaft as a land both captivating and perilous. Verdant meadows and sprawling crop fields give way to ancient forests, forgotten ruins, and glacial territories untouched by the sun—even under the shadow of an ancient volcano. The weather is wildly unpredictable, reinforcing the idea that the island itself is alive, moody, and untamed.

Whether walking the roads or straying into uncharted wilderness, players can expect to face:

  • Bloodthirsty beasts

  • Ruthless scavengers

  • Monstrous entities

But danger brings reward. Hidden caves, ancient artifacts, and lost secrets dot the island, promising deep exploration and risk-reward gameplay for those willing to tread into the unknown.

Factions and Political Intrigue

Grayshaft is also a land of competing ideologies and power struggles. Players will encounter several factions, each with their own motivations:

  • The Order of the Seven – A disciplined and code-bound force.

  • The Free Hunters – Rogue warriors who live by their own principles.

Many more operate in secrecy, and part of the challenge will be discerning allies from enemies. The game’s complex narrative and branching dialogue will ensure no two journeys are quite the same.

A Feature-Rich RPG Experience

Fire & Frost has been ambitious in building Of Ash and Steel:

  • 300+ quests across the game

  • Over 30,000 lines of dialogue

  • 180+ weapons and 270+ armor and accessories

  • 30+ monster types and 80+ world events

  • 200+ crafting recipes

  • 5 hours of original soundtrack

These elements work together to deliver a rich, reactive world that RPG fans will find both familiar and fresh.

Closed Playtest & Release Timeline

While a firm release date has not yet been confirmed, Of Ash and Steel is still slated for PC launch later this year. The upcoming playtest will allow players to experience the early quests and introductory narrative, and feedback will help shape final development.
