Ninja Gaiden 4 to Offer 15–20 Hour Campaign, Challenge Missions, and Optional “Purgatory” Battles

In a recent interview with Next Play, Ninja Gaiden 4 Game Director Masakazu Hirayama revealed that players can expect a robust amount of content when the game launches later this year. The main story is estimated to take between fifteen and twenty hours for most players, with plenty of post-game challenges to extend replayability.

According to Hirayama, completing the campaign unlocks Master Ninja difficulty, giving veterans a much tougher challenge. Beyond the main story, players can tackle an array of Challenge Missions and Chapter Challenges, designed to provide fresh combat scenarios. These missions won’t just be boss battles; some will pit players against waves of enemies under unique conditions, offering gameplay twists not encountered in the campaign.

Ninja Gaiden 4 will also feature an intriguing optional mode called “Purgatory,” which hides special battles within the game world. Before entering these encounters, players can place wagers, raising both the stakes and the potential rewards. Hirayama described this as an evolution of the “Tests of Valor” from earlier Ninja Gaiden titles, adding that the risk-versus-reward mechanic is intended to “stoke the flames of challenge” for dedicated players.

The game is being co-developed by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, with Xbox Game Studios serving as the publisher. Ninja Gaiden 4 is scheduled to launch on October 21 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. In line with other Xbox Game Studios releases, it will be available on PC and Xbox Game Pass from day one.

Will you dive straight into Master Ninja difficulty after your first run, or explore the high-stakes “Purgatory” battles first?
