NetEase Has Marvel’s Approval to Create Original Characters for Marvel Rivals

Marvel Rivals has quickly become one of the biggest hits of 2025, bringing together iconic heroes and villains from across the Marvel universe in a fast-paced multiplayer experience. While the game continues to expand its roster with well-known characters, it now seems possible that NetEase could go even further, by introducing entirely new, original characters of its own.

In an interview with MP1st, game director Guangguang confirmed that NetEase has received explicit approval from Marvel and Disney to create original characters for Marvel Rivals.

"Yes, we are allowed to introduce original characters in Marvel Rivals," Guangguang said when asked if such a move was possible. However, when pressed on whether NetEase is actively working on one, Guangguang only added, "Stay tuned."

Expanding Beyond the Marvel Roster

The possibility of original characters is an exciting development, as it would allow NetEase to leave its own creative stamp on the Marvel universe while still building upon the franchise’s legacy. At the same time, the studio has already gained attention for its unique artistic interpretations of Marvel’s established characters, from reimagined costume designs to distinctive gameplay mechanics.

Given Marvel Rivals’ appeal lies heavily in seeing familiar heroes like Spider-Man, Iron Man, or Doctor Strange take the battlefield, some may wonder if creating an original character is worth the effort when the Marvel roster is already so vast. Still, the freedom to do so gives NetEase an additional creative edge, one that could potentially surprise fans in a future update.

For now, the director’s words hint at a possibility that has not yet been realized, but the door is wide open. Whether NetEase chooses to walk through it remains to be seen, and fans will be watching closely with every update announcement.

Would you like to see NetEase introduce an entirely new original hero or villain to Marvel Rivals, or should they stick with Marvel’s existing universe?
