Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance Gets First Full Trailer, But Release Date Remains 2027
Capcom has finally delivered a much more substantial look at Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance, revealing new monsters, story developments, environments, and combat mechanics for the massive expansion during the latest PlayStation State of Play. Ascendance was originally announced during Summer Game Fest 2026, but its initial reveal offered only a brief glimpse at what Capcom was preparing. The new footage now provides a much clearer picture of how the expansion will evolve Monster Hunter Wilds when it arrives in 2027.
Ascendance takes place several years after the conclusion of Monster Hunter Wilds. The story begins after the colossal Elder Dragon Lao Shan Lung suddenly enters the Forbidden Lands and overwhelms the Expedition Team. In response, the group constructs the new Madoi Stronghold in preparation for the creature's eventual return. At the same time, the disappearance of the mist above Wyveria reveals the Skybound Eyrie, a new region positioned high above the clouds that combines expansive landscapes, ancient ruins, new endemic life, and previously unexplored ecosystems. Nata has also grown from the young Keeper seen in Wilds into a full member of the Expedition Team, now accompanied by his Wudwud partner Bangard.
The trailer also introduces Araketa, a Bird Wyvern capable of controlling powerful air currents and coordinating attacks with others of its species, alongside Gundoraja, a newly discovered Elder Dragon capable of manipulating storm clouds. Guardian Monsters are also expanding beyond their previous habitats as ecological abnormalities begin spreading throughout the Forbidden Lands, suggesting Ascendance will make significant changes to areas players already explored in the base game. Capcom has already confirmed that Ascendance brings Master Rank hunts alongside new quest ranks, locations, monsters, and expanded weapon actions.
Combat receives one of the largest upgrades through the Boost Bracer, a new piece of equipment connected to the Hunter's Slinger that enhances the individual strengths of all 14 weapon types. Hunters can perform powerful Boost Driver attacks to create openings before entering a temporary Boost state, where additional attacks and enhanced weapon actions become available. Capcom is continuing to release individual demonstrations showing how Boost Actions affect each weapon type, with further abilities and gameplay mechanics still planned for future reveals.
Players will get their first opportunity to try Ascendance at Tokyo Game Show 2026, where Capcom plans to offer a playable demonstration featuring a hunt against Araketa. However, the new trailer still does not provide an exact launch date. Capcom continues to list Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance simply for 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. The base Monster Hunter Wilds game will be required, and players must reach Hunter Rank 40 and complete the 7 star assignment "Awaking From a Dream" before accessing the expansion and Master Rank content.
Ascendance will also play an important role in Capcom's broader strategy for the franchise. The publisher has previously said it wants Monster Hunter Wilds to eventually surpass Monster Hunter World in total sales, making the expansion one of the most important pieces of the game's long term growth strategy alongside technical improvements, pricing changes, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 version. Capcom's ambitions for Monster Hunter Wilds place significant pressure on Ascendance to deliver the same kind of long term momentum that Iceborne created for Monster Hunter World.
This is the first Ascendance presentation that genuinely feels like a major Monster Hunter expansion rather than an announcement teaser. The Skybound Eyrie gives Capcom an opportunity to push Wilds toward dramatically different environments, while Master Rank, new Elder Dragons, and the Boost Bracer could substantially reshape combat progression for returning players.
The absence of an exact release date is increasingly noticeable, but Capcom still has plenty of time within the 2027 window. With a playable Tokyo Game Show demo now confirmed, the development team appears ready to begin revealing Ascendance at a much faster pace.
Does the new Skybound Eyrie and Boost Bracer system make Ascendance feel like the major Monster Hunter Wilds expansion you were expecting?
