Micron Announces Shipment of 1γ DRAM: Pioneering Memory Technology Advancements for Future Compute Needs
Micron Technology, Inc. has announced the shipment of its industry’s first high-performance 1γ (1-gamma) DRAM, marking a significant milestone in memory technology designed for next-generation compute applications. The new 1γ node, built on a sixth-generation (10nm-class) DDR5 architecture, is already being sampled to ecosystem partners and select customers.
This groundbreaking 1γ DRAM builds on Micron’s previous 1α and 1β node innovations to deliver superior performance and power efficiency across data center, client, and mobile platforms. Key highlights include:
Enhanced Performance: Designed for next-generation CPUs, the 1γ node enables DDR5 memory products that can reach speeds up to 9200 MT/s. Micron’s 16Gb DDR5 product is reported to achieve up to a 15% speed increase over its predecessor.
Improved Power Efficiency: Thanks to next-generation high-K metal gate CMOS technology and optimized design, the new DRAM reduces power consumption by over 20%, resulting in improved thermal profiles.
Higher Bit-Density Output: Leveraging advanced EUV lithography and process innovations, the 1γ node provides more than 30% additional bits-per-wafer output, enabling scalable and efficient memory supply.
Wide Application Range: The technology will underpin a range of future products—from data center DDR5 solutions that boost server performance and energy efficiency to low-power DRAM for AI PCs, mobile devices, and automotive applications.
Scott DeBoer, EVP and Chief Technology & Products Officer at Micron, stated, “Micron’s expertise in developing proprietary DRAM technologies, combined with our strategic use of EUV lithography, has resulted in a robust portfolio of cutting-edge 1γ-based memory products poised to propel the AI ecosystem forward.” Similarly, Sumit Sadana, EVP and Chief Business Officer, remarked, “Micron’s 1γ DRAM node is a groundbreaking achievement with its unmatched power efficiency and extraordinary performance, set to revolutionize the AI ecosystem by delivering scalable memory solutions across all segments.”
The new 1γ DRAM node is set to be integrated across Micron’s memory portfolio, addressing the increasing demand for high-performance, energy-efficient memory solutions driven by AI, cloud, Edge computing, and consumer applications.
