Marvel Rivals and Path of Exile 2 Staying on Top in Revenue, Says Newzoo Report

A freshly released Newzoo report for December 2024 offers insight into PC and console engagement across six major markets, with data showing notable fluctuations influenced by holiday sales. Unsurprisingly, free-to-play sensation Marvel Rivals and Path of Exile 2 continue to hold top spots in revenue thanks to steady player interest and ongoing in-game events. Marvel Rivals, which has launched with broad accessibility and a lively community, landed at a solid third position, surpassing multiple popular live-service titles. In contrast, Overwatch 2, which had been in ninth place, fell to twelfth. Path of Exile 2, now in Early Access, looks poised to remain strong for the foreseeable future as Grinding Gear Games rolls out fresh content.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle also performed impressively, climbing to the seventeenth spot in engagement. Despite not breaching the top ranks, the game’s inclusion in Day One Game Pass attracted players who were eager to experience the latest Indiana Jones adventure at a lower cost. It’s worth noting that the title isn’t available on PlayStation, which makes its performance in the engagement rankings quite respectable.

Grand Theft Auto V witnessed a hefty revenue boost, climbing eight spots to eighth place following the release of the Agents of Sabotage DLC. Meanwhile, holiday sales propelled older favorites like Hogwarts Legacy, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Cyberpunk 2077 back into the top 20 as steep discounts made these heavyweight titles more attractive to new buyers. Another remarkable jump came from Gran Turismo 7, which soared from 39 to 14, coinciding with the franchise’s 25th-anniversary celebration—an impressive feat that signals a renewed interest in the series.

Sports gaming isn’t lagging behind either, as EA Sports College Football 25 rose five spots to break into the top ten, buoyed by a 50% discount and strong ongoing support. Typically, December’s results are influenced by major global holiday events and sales, with the Steam Winter Sale often contributing to a noticeable uptick in purchases of premium titles.

Looking ahead, it’s likely that Marvel Rivals and Path of Exile 2 will remain formidable contenders. The ongoing Spring Festival event and first full season in Marvel Rivals should continue to draw players, while Path of Exile 2’s Early Access phase consistently offers new updates and improvements. With more competition around the corner, all eyes remain on these two to see if they can maintain their momentum in the months to come.
