Mafia: The Old Country Has Gone Gold Ahead of August 8 Release
Developer Hangar 13 has officially announced that Mafia: The Old Country has gone gold, signaling that the game's core development is complete and it is on track for its scheduled release on August 8, 2025. The announcement was made via a short celebratory post on the official Mafia X account, where the team expressed their excitement and noted they are now focusing on polishing the game for launch day.
This long-anticipated return marks the first brand-new entry in the Mafia franchise since Mafia III released in 2016. While remasters of the second and third games and a full remake of the original Mafia kept the series in the spotlight, Mafia: The Old Country is poised to reinvigorate the franchise with a fresh yet familiar direction—this time set in the old world of Italy, before the events of the first game.
Hangar 13 is touting the title as the "best looking Mafia game ever made," leveraging the power of Unreal Engine 5 and co-developing the experience with Italian studio Stormind Games. Authenticity has been a core pillar of the game’s development. From its architecture and dialects to the music and story beats, the developers aimed to capture the true essence of early 20th-century Italy, immersing players in a criminal underworld rich in culture, tradition, and cinematic storytelling.
“Our priority has always been to ensure that everything in the game feels authentic,” said Salvo Fallica, Senior Project Manager at Stormind Games. “The details are absolutely key in keeping the immersion of the player,” added Hangar 13’s Lead Writer, Matthew Aitken.
Mafia: The Old Country will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The game serves as a narrative prequel and is expected to set the stage for the saga that follows in the original trilogy, providing insight into the roots of the Mafia underworld.
The game’s gold status ensures that physical disc production and digital pre-load processes can begin in earnest, minimizing risk for last-minute delays. With the development now locked, the team will shift entirely to bug fixing, optimization, and final polish—ensuring fans receive a refined, compelling experience at launch.
