Larian Announces New Divinity Game at The Game Awards 2025 Marking the Return of Its Flagship Fantasy RPG Series
After weeks of speculation driven by an ominous giant statue discovered in the Mojave Desert and a revealing patent filing, the mystery is finally resolved. During The Game Awards 2025, Larian Studios officially unveiled a new entry in its celebrated Divinity franchise with a striking cinematic trailer that confirmed what fans had been eagerly anticipating.
For long time Larian fans, the Divinity series remains the studio’s core fantasy RPG lineage. While Baldur’s Gate 3 propelled the studio to unprecedented mainstream success, Divinity has historically been its flagship worldbuilding and systems driven franchise. Once Larian confirmed it would not continue with Baldur’s Gate 4 as its next major project, many suspected a return to Rivellon was imminent and tonight’s announcement makes that official. Although the new title does not yet carry a numerical subtitle, it represents the seventh overall entry in the Divinity universe.
The cinematic reveal does not include gameplay but succeeds in setting a dark, ambitious tone that hints at the scale and narrative weight Larian intends for this new chapter. The timing of the announcement is also notable. Larian is still actively supporting Baldur’s Gate 3 and has not fully concluded development work on the title. CEO Swen Vincke previously stated that their next major project “needs a lot more time in the oven. By the time it’s going to be finished, it’s going to be so big.” This suggests that Divinity is still early in production.
Early announcement strategies often serve multiple goals. Larian may be using the reveal to accelerate recruitment, expanding the team required to build a project of this scale. Alternatively, it may be laying groundwork for an approach similar to Baldur’s Gate 3, which launched in early access before evolving into a genre defining 1.0 release shaped through player collaboration.
Regardless of the path ahead, the return of Divinity marks a major moment for RPG fans. Larian’s proven expertise with narrative depth, tactical systems, and community driven iteration sets high expectations for what is to come.
Are you excited to see Larian return to Divinity, and would you want the game to follow the early access model used for Baldur’s Gate 3?
