Kratos Rumored to Wield a Khopesh in the Next God of War Game

The next chapter in the God of War franchise may take Kratos into entirely new mythological territory. In the latest episode of Insider Gaming’s podcast, well-known leaker Tom Henderson revealed that Sony Santa Monica is developing a new mainline God of War entry, separate from the rumored 2.5D Metroidvania spin-off. According to Henderson, Kratos will wield a new weapon from ancient Egypt.

A New Weapon for a New Pantheon

Henderson suggested that Kratos will be armed with a curved Egyptian sword, likely referring to the Khopesh, a weapon that originated in Egypt as an evolution of battle axes. The Khopesh was often seen as both a tool of war and a symbol of power in ancient Egyptian culture.

If true, this addition would follow a pattern set by the Norse saga, which introduced the Leviathan Axe, a weapon deeply tied to Norse tradition. By giving Kratos a Khopesh, Sony Santa Monica would be strongly signaling a shift to an Egyptian setting, long rumored as a potential direction for the franchise.

Egyptian Setting Rumors Resurface

The idea of exploring Egyptian mythology in God of War is not new. Before the release of the 2018 reboot, game director Cory Barlog openly mentioned that Egyptian and Mayan mythologies were considered as possible backdrops for Kratos’ next saga after the Norse arc. While the studio ultimately chose Norse mythology for the last two games, fan speculation about Egypt has persisted for years.

Timeline and Other Projects

It has already been three years since God of War Ragnarök launched, and while development of the next mainline entry may still be in its early stages, Henderson’s comments hint that Sony Santa Monica is actively shaping its future.

Meanwhile, the studio is also rumored to be working on a smaller 2.5D Metroidvania-style spin-off, which may arrive sooner and serve as a bridge before the next large-scale release.

Fans also have the Amazon Prime Video God of War series to look forward to. The show’s first season is expected to begin filming in March 2026, potentially keeping the franchise in the spotlight while players wait for Kratos’ next adventure.

Would you like for Sony Santa Monica to choose Egypt as the next God of War setting, or should Kratos’ journey move somewhere else entirely?
