GPD Announces 128GB Unified Memory Solution For Win 5 Console

GPD has revealed that its flagship Win 5 gaming handheld will feature an unprecedented 128GB unified memory solution, making it not only the first Strix Halo-based handheld but also the first portable console to reach such massive memory capacity.

Win 5: The First Strix Halo Gaming Handheld

Launched just ten days ago, the GPD Win 5 is the world’s first handheld to ship with AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 (Strix Halo) processor, which packs 16 Zen 5 CPU cores and an integrated RDNA 3.5-based Radeon 8060S iGPU with 40 Compute Units. Performance-wise, the Radeon 8060S sits close to a GeForce RTX 4060 mobile GPU, allowing the Win 5 to push 60+ FPS at 1080p High/Ultra settings in modern titles.

But the Strix Halo chip isn’t the only highlight. GPD has paired it with a 128GB LPDDR5X 8000 MT/s unified memory system, running in quad-channel mode, making the Win 5 an industry-first handheld designed for both gaming and heavy-duty computing tasks.

In a statement posted on X, GPD emphasized the role of Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) in enhancing performance. UMA allows the CPU, GPU, and NPU to access the same memory pool without needing data migration, significantly reducing latency and improving energy efficiency.

According to GPD, the Win 5 allocates up to 96GB as video memory, making it capable of handling 8K video rendering, scientific simulations, and AI inference workloads for models up to 70B parameters. In real-world tests, GPD claims UMA improves energy efficiency by 87% for AI-related tasks, while also simplifying programming at the hardware level.

With its large memory pool and high-speed bandwidth, the Win 5 is not just a gaming powerhouse but also an AI-ready portable workstation, suited for developers, content creators, and researchers who need both compute and graphics performance in a mobile form factor.
