God of War Laufey Launches February 16, 2027 as Cory Barlog Confirms Kratos Sequel

Santa Monica Studio delivered 2 major announcements during its God of War Laufey panel at San Diego Comic Con, confirming a February 16, 2027 release date and revealing that another God of War game starring Kratos is already in development.

The release date was confirmed through the official Santa Monica Studio announcement, ending speculation that the game could arrive sometime between February and March 2027. God of War Laufey will launch exclusively for PlayStation 5, placing Faye at the center of the next mainline chapter less than 7 months after its gameplay reveal.

Although Laufey shifts the playable focus away from Kratos, Santa Monica Studio Head of Creative Cory Barlog confirmed that the Ghost of Sparta will return as the protagonist of another game directly connected to Faye’s adventure.

"Kratos is in another game immediately after this that directly connects to the events of the Laufey game."

No title, platform, or release window was revealed for the next Kratos game. However, Barlog explained that Laufey continues ideas established in the previous games while expanding the world and preparing the narrative foundation for what follows. His comments position Faye’s adventure as an essential chapter in the wider God of War storyline rather than an isolated character project.

Phranque, the unusual cosmic cube voiced by Jack Quaid, appears to be particularly important to that long term plan. Barlog said the character has existed since the beginning of the project and that the events surrounding Faye and her companions are preparing the franchise for something significantly larger.

"I’m on a Zoom with Cory and Ariel, and they told me I’m gonna be a cube."
— Quote by: Jack Quaid

Quaid described Phranque as an innocent character who lives in the present and sees hope in Faye. He believes that innocence also brings out a different emotional side of the protagonist, suggesting the companion will contribute more than comic relief during her journey through the Everywhen.

The character’s early involvement aligns with previous coverage, which revealed that Deborah Ann Woll learned about the Laufey project in 2018 and saw early promotional material featuring both Faye and Phranque. Santa Monica Studio has therefore been developing the foundations of this story since the beginning of the modern God of War era.

God of War Laufey will also enter one of the most competitive release periods currently scheduled for 2027. Tomb Raider Legacy of Atlantis arrives on February 12, followed by Laufey on February 16, Persona 4 Revival on February 18, and Fable on February 23. Metro 2039 is also scheduled to launch during February, creating an unusually concentrated month for major action and role playing releases.

The confirmation of another Kratos led game fundamentally changes how God of War Laufey should be viewed. Faye’s story is not simply filling gaps left by the Norse saga. It is being designed as the narrative bridge into the franchise’s next major era.

That connection also raises the stakes for Phranque. The character’s visual design may have divided early reactions, but Santa Monica Studio has clearly treated him as part of its long term mythology rather than a late addition. Whether players embrace the cosmic cube will likely depend on how successfully the game connects his innocence and unusual nature to Faye’s emotional journey.

February 2027 will create intense competition for player attention, but God of War remains one of PlayStation’s strongest brands. The greater challenge will be proving that Faye can carry the franchise while simultaneously establishing a compelling reason for Kratos to return immediately afterward.

Does confirmation of a directly connected Kratos sequel make you more interested in playing God of War Laufey?
