Gears of War Film Won’t Release Before 2027, Confirms Producer Kelly McCormick
It has been nearly three years since Netflix announced a Gears of War movie adaptation, but fans eager to see the iconic Xbox franchise brought to the big screen will need to wait a while longer. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, producer Kelly McCormick confirmed that the film will not debut before 2027.
The project is being helmed by action director David Leitch, known for high-octane films such as Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw, Bullet Train, and most recently, The Fall Guy. Leitch is developing the movie alongside screenwriter Jon Spaihts, whose credits include Dune and Doctor Strange.
“We’re writing right now with Jon Spaihts, and we’re really excited about it. There’s a lot of energy from Gears of War company The Coalition and from Netflix, because The Coalition is releasing a game in 2026. We won’t hit that release date, but maybe something that feels relevant to the release of the new game. It’s an opportunity for David to do a war film, which he hasn’t gotten to do yet, and a bit of sci-fi in his own way with this beloved IP.” – Kelly McCormick
No Rush to Sync With the Games
McCormick clarified that while The Coalition’s next major entry, Gears of War: E-Day, is set for release in 2026, the film will not be forced to meet that timeline. Instead, the team is prioritizing quality over synergy, avoiding the pitfalls of rushed tie-in releases.
This delay may ultimately benefit the adaptation, giving the filmmakers more time to craft a story that properly translates the intensity, sci-fi warfare, and emotional core of the franchise to a cinematic experience.
While the film is still years away, the gaming side of the franchise is busier than ever. Tomorrow, Microsoft and The Coalition will launch Gears of War: Reloaded, an enhanced version of the Ultimate Edition from 2015, marking the first time PlayStation players can officially experience the series.
Then, in 2026, fans will get Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel that tells the story of Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago during the harrowing events of Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde first erupted onto Sera.
Between Reloaded, E-Day, and the upcoming film, Gears of War is set for a major resurgence over the next few years. While the movie may miss the 2026 game launch window, its arrival after E-Day could allow both projects to stand stronger on their own.
Would you prefer the Gears of War movie to stick closer to the games’ stories, or should Leitch and Spaihts take creative liberties to reimagine the world for film?
